WindSpring and Kyocera Wireless to Engage in Joint Evaluation of Data Miniaturization Technology; New Micro Data Format Enables Full Manipulation of Cell Phone Data While Miniaturized
Business Wire, June 13, 2005
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Leads to Reduced Phone Cost, Increased Phone Functionality and Extended Phone Life
WindSpring(TM), Inc. today announced a collaborative technology effort with Kyocera Wireless Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, to study the impact of WindSpring's Gazelle(TM) software for Kyocera's next generation handsets. Gazelle incorporates WindSpring's patented Data Miniaturization Technology (DMT(TM)) that transforms large files into the new Micro Data Format (MDF(TM)), enabling high-speed seek, search, edit and display of mobile application data while stored in a loss-less miniaturized state. The smaller MDF files can then be accessed and transmitted more quickly, which results in performance improvements for internal cell phone files, edit-in-place applications and requirements for Firmware Over The Air (FOTA), XML synchronization, remote computing and mobile GPS navigation.
By transforming internal cell phone and Smartphone files to MDF, the effective storage capacity of mobile devices can be substantially increased, without incurring costly hardware upgrades. This capability enables mobile handset manufacturers to reduce development time and cost, accelerate time to market for new products and upgrades, and extend the life of existing devices.
"The increased use of data applications on wireless phones requires us to improve functionality and data storage capacity on our devices without significantly increasing costs per unit," said Franz Elizondo, director of business development for Kyocera Wireless Corp. "We are excited about the potential for MDF to be the underlying capability that gives us a competitive edge in achieving both of these goals as we bring new phones to market."
"We are pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with Kyocera to incorporate MDF to their next generation phones," said Mark Arman, vice president of marketing for WindSpring. "By integrating DMT into their cell phones, Kyocera will be able to increase the useful life of existing handsets, reduce ongoing hardware and software engineering cost, accelerate time to market for new products, and provide a larger set of features and capabilities for consumers."

About WindSpring, Inc.
WindSpring is a privately held software company headquartered in San Jose, California. The company is the pioneer of a new, patented WindSpring Micro Data Format (MDF) that reduces the data footprint of large files and uniquely enables the high-speed seek, search, edit and display of application data while stored in a loss-less miniaturized state. WindSpring products for OEMs, enterprises and consumers are ideal for space-constrained devices such as cell phones, Smartphones and PDAs with internal memory limitations, and Wireless, Mobile and Digital Mapping applications such as GPS navigation and remote computing, where large amounts of data often slow system performance and communications.
