Mount Sinai School of Medicine Reports Dramatic Improvement in Oracle Database Application Response Times Following BiTMICRO E-Disk SAN Deployment
Business Wire, June 14, 2005
SINGAPORE -- Solid State Flash Disk and Network Storage Solutions from BiTMICRO Optimize Oracle(R) Database Performance, Greatly Enhancing Response Times and System Reliability
BiTMICRO(R) Networks, a pioneer in intelligent flash IDE/ATA, SCSI, USB, VME, PMC, CompactPCI, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel solid state storage solutions, today announced at the CommunicAsia2005 show in Singapore the successful utilization of its E-Disk(R)SAN offering to meet the demanding IT requirements of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM). Located in Manhattan, NY, MSSM is one of the world's foremost centers for medical and scientific training. Aside from medical education, the institution also conducts basic science and clinical research.
MSSM operates Sinai Central, an online portal that provides a variety of applications for the Mount Sinai community. Sinai Central is used for procurement, HR, financial reporting, clinical review, and a host of other services. It includes both transactional and reporting systems. This intranet is driven by an Oracle 9i database engine running on a IBM x445 enterprise server. The storage network features Apple XServe RAID systems and a middle tier composed of a cluster of 10 application servers and web servers.
Due to an increasing number of Sinai Central users, MSSM noticed a considerable decline in response time. Since I/O-intensive activities are common in Oracle database deployments, MSSM's IT administrators decided to reduce I/O wait time by transferring the database's most frequently accessed files (also known as "hot files") to an SSD cache, an E-Disk(R)SAN JBOD featuring two 2GB E-Disk(R) 3F2 drives.
With each E-Disk 3F2 drive capable of handling more than 9,000 I/Os per second, the new I/O subsystem significantly lessened wait times and improved overall user experience. "BiTMICRO's solution offered the best value and flexibility among all the other solid state storage and RAID solutions that we've considered," says Barnabas Wolf, Senior Developer/Database Administrator of MSSM.
"Oracle database users will find that BiTMICRO's flash solid state disks and arrays are the most cost effective alternative to processor and server upgrades. E-Disk drives are flexible enough to meet the requirements of any DAS, SAN or NAS implementation," said Rudy Bruce, President of BiTMICRO Networks.
