Strategy Analytics: Commercial Strength Beats Technology Capabilities in Competition for Mobile Content Delivery Platforms; Nokia Networks, Microsoft Elata and Motricity Are Best Positioned Vendors
Business Wire, June 17, 2005
BOSTON -- Strategy Analytics, the global research and consulting company, today released, "Mobile Content Delivery Platforms: Search for Value-Add and Scale as Solutions Commoditize." This report concludes that operators are now more concerned with the commercial aspects of content provisioning as the majority of the technical problems have been solved and little functional differentiation exists between the competing platforms.
As the content market matures, the number of content retailers will proliferate, making it a growing target segment for platform vendors. However, Philip Taylor, a Director in the Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice, notes, "Increasingly, purchase decisions will be made by operators on the basis of a variety of commercial factors including the business objective of the operator, the compatibility of the delivery platform with existing administration systems, the financial stability of the platform vendor and the strength of the platform vendor's partnerships with other IT Services companies. Outside of this, the ability to offer value added services, such as Campaign Management will also make a difference to vendors competing for operator business."
David Kerr, Vice President of the Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice, points to a number of stand-out vendors. "We believe that Elata, Mobilitec and Sun are well positioned to provide platforms across the key content retailing segments. We additionally expect Nokia Network Services to gain a significant share of mainstream operators, and Microsoft to have a significant share of the non-operator content retailer market."
He adds, "Streaming audio/ video services are likely to remain problematic for some time, and we expect that RealNetworks and PVNS will continue to grow their revenues on the basis of these services."
