Scalable, Automated Policy-based Information Lifecycle Management Takes Shape as NuView Unveils File Lifecycle Manager 3.0; Latest Release Extends ILM to NFS Environments
Business Wire, June 20, 2005
HOUSTON -- NuView, Inc.(R), a leading provider of solutions designed to simplify enterprise data management, today announced that its File Lifecycle Manager(R) (FLM) version 3.0 (FLM 3.0) software is now available. As the most widely adopted Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) solution for unstructured data, FLM has been implemented by leading organizations worldwide across all verticals.
Unstructured data is real and is growing at a rate of 100% each year. Today, most enterprises are making it a top priority to implement a tiered storage architecture but are struggling because they are finding this to be a time-consuming and largely manual process. NuView's FLM enables enterprises to easily classify data and perform automated, policy-based ILM for files between primary NAS devices and secondary storage systems. Unlike other solutions that have separate data classification and movement engines, FLM combines both into one engine. By deploying FLM, enterprises can achieve significant reductions in storage TCO through both decreased requirements for primary storage and reduced costs of backup and storage administration. Today, one FLM customer has already archived over 15 million files from primary to secondary storage leading to cost savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Within the next year NuView expects a single customer to archive over 100 million files from primary to secondary storage.
"I consider NuView's FLM one of the few products on the market designed to classify data and automate file data movement within a heterogeneous enterprise NAS environment," said Brad O'Neill, Senior Analyst, Taneja Group. "Users have repeatedly confirmed that FLM is easy to deploy and manage and they find immediate ROI benefits through improved asset utilization. Enterprises looking to implement a highly scalable ILM solution and a tiered storage architecture for their unstructured data should seriously consider NuView's FLM."
The latest release of FLM provides new, advanced policies for increasing scalability, simplifying administration and achieving maximum utilization of primary storage by ensuring that the primary storage devices never run out of space. In addition, this release enables enterprises, for the first time, to deploy an ILM solution across CIFS and NFS protocols.
"Selecting an ILM solution was one of the biggest decisions our IT team has made recently," explained Chris Johnson, network administrator for storage at Mustang Engineering. "FLM's highly scalable and automated, policy-based data classification and mobility capabilities have enabled Mustang to create a tiered storage architecture fundamentally helping us build an ILM strategy that has led to increased efficiencies and cost savings. FLM's ability to transparently move data between tiers of storage was a very important consideration as we did not have to change current user practices or behaviors."
"FLM continues to change the way enterprise IT managers approach storage strategies and implement storage practices by delivering the same award-winning functionality for UNIX as it does for Windows," said Rahul Mehta, CEO of NuView, Inc. "Now, for the first time, a UNIX user can transparently access archived data from primary storage. Administrators also benefit from continued ease-of-use, additional infrastructure support, as well as increased scalability and utilization through powerful new FLM policies."
FLM 3.0 delivers the following new and enhanced features:
SUPPORT FOR SIMULTANEOUS NFS AND CIFS ACCESSIBLE DATA ON NETWORK APPLIANCE FILERS
This enhancement enables archiving of both Windows and UNIX users. A file can be retrieved by either CIFS or NFS users thereby providing multi-protocol support.
NEW POLICY - PRIMARY SPACE OPTIMIZER(TM)
The Primary Space Optimizer policy maximizes utilization by ensuring that primary storage never runs out of space. It works by automatically re-migrating restored files back to the secondary store, thereby optimizing space on the primary storage device and mitigating the impact of large unplanned restores.
NEW POLICY - ARCHIVAL STORAGE MANAGER(TM)
The Archival Storage Manager policy enables enterprises to drastically improve scalability by defining multiple offline stores as a pool, eliminating the need to setup large volumes as secondary stores (to prevent running out of space) or track capacity utilization per offline store. This results in minimizing the administration related to the management of policy-based pooling and monitoring of secondary stores.
NEW POLICY - ADAPTIVE ARCHIVAL ALGORITHMS(TM)
The Adaptive Archival Algorithms policy greatly simplifies administration by enabling enterprises to exclude certain restored files from future migrations by excluding thrashed files. Optimizing migration rules leads to reduced network bandwidth utilization.
