Siemens Multi-Slice CT System Recognized for Sensational Design; SOMATOM Sensation 64 Earns Gold Medical Design of Excellence Award
Business Wire, June 28, 2005
MALVERN, Pa. -- Recognized for its exceptional image quality, speed, and ease-of-use, Siemens Medical Solutions SOMATOM(R) Sensation 64 computed tomography (CT) system was honored with the gold award in the 2005 Medical Design of Excellence Awards (MDEA). The Sensation 64, known for its outstanding capabilities such as its z-Sharp(TM) technology that doubles the scanner's data acquisition capacity, is the world's fastest and most advanced 64-slice CT system. Judges in the eighth annual MDEA competition recognized the multi-slice system's excellent engineering and innovative design, identifying it as "a paradigm shift in CT scanning technology."
"This distinction, along with the hundreds of Sensation 64 systems installed worldwide, is testament to our continued commitment to the most advanced and effective imaging technologies that benefit both clinicians and patients alike," said Bappa Choudhury, vice president, CT Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. "We are honored to be recognized in such a prestigious competition as the Medical Design of Excellence Awards."
With almost 300 systems installed to date, the Sensation 64 has the largest installation base of any 64-slice CT system worldwide. The award-winning system provides advanced applications, early visualization of disease, and faster information acquisition, enabling clinicians to image incredibly small details in a matter of seconds without compromises in spatial resolution, scan time, or image quality. These advanced applications coupled with the system's simple, user-friendly design stood out among the competition.
Sponsored by European Medical Device Manufacturer (EMDM) publisher Cannon Communications, the MDEA program honors design and engineering achievements within the medical industry. This year's entries were evaluated by a panel of judges based on several criteria including user, patient, and business benefits; design and functionality; and contribution to the advancement of healthcare.
The Sensation 64 provides 64-slice sub-millimeter imaging per rotation and currently has the world's fastest gantry rotation time of 0.33 seconds for exceptional speed and sub-millimeter volume coverage. Utilizing Siemens z-Sharp technology, the Sensation 64 sets new benchmarks in image quality and is designed to offer significant improvements in acquisition time and resolution, which are key for cardiac, vascular, neurology and emergency examinations.
