Cyber Security Guru Howard A. Schmidt Joins IMlogic Advisory Board to Guide Security Strategy and Product Development; Leader in Instant Messaging Security Taps Former White House Cyber Security Chief to Chart Future of Real-Time Threat Protection
Business Wire, June 6, 2005
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Former White House Special Advisor for Cyberspace Security, Howard A. Schmidt has joined Instant Messaging (IM) management software leader IMlogic's board of advisors. Schmidt will draw on nearly 40 years of corporate security, defense and law enforcement experience to advise the company on its continuing strategy to develop security-focused solutions to address the ever changing face of security challenges. In his advisory role, Schmidt will offer guidance on new product development, business development, marketing and other operations geared toward the company's security strategy.
The emergence of instant messaging as a mainstream communication tool has posed new challenges for information security and threat protection. Used by hundreds of millions of consumer and business users alike, IM has become the new target for viruses, worms, and malware that are capable of spreading in "real-time" across global IM networks, infecting as many as 500,000 hosts in less than 30 seconds. IM threats are growing at over 275% a year and are increasingly compromising Internet security. Organizations that are vulnerable to IM attacks require immediate detection and proactive response in order to combat. IMlogic is the trusted leader in setting industry-wide standards for IM security, and providing enterprise software to address the vulnerabilities associated with unmonitored and unmanaged IM usage.
"In addition to the great capabilities that applications such as IM and P2P bring to the online world, they also create the opportunity for new threats, challenging the traditional methods of threat detection and prevention," said Howard A. Schmidt. "IMlogic has the industry leadership, partnerships, and technology to bring real-time threat protection to the Internet."
Schmidt's arrival brings in-depth expertise about the technology and strategy for predicting, planning for, and combating the new paradigm of real-time threats. Schmidt's security resume includes serving as chair and vice chair of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. He has served as head of security for online auction giant eBay as its vice president and chief information security officer and chief security strategist, and for Microsoft as its chief security officer. He established the federal government's first dedicated computer forensic lab while serving as supervisory special agent and director of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Computer Crime and Information Warfare Division. Schmidt established a reputation as a pioneer in computer forensic and computer evidence collection while he directed the Computer Exploitation Team at the FBI's National Drug Intelligence Center. Schmidt has also served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Reserve.
"Howard is one of the great minds in Internet security whose experience will help IMlogic remain at the forefront of IM security technology," said IMlogic Chief Executive Officer Francis deSouza. "As IM threats increase in reach and complexity, we're privileged to tap Howard's expertise to ensure that IM continues to be a safe and secure communication medium."
