TELUS Completes Successful Field Trial of CopperGate Technology; Home Networking Technology Meets Requirements for In-Home Distribution of Next Generation Services Over Existing Coax Cables
Business Wire, June 6, 2005
NEWARK, Calif. -- CopperGate Communications today announced completion of a successful field trial by TELUS, one of Canada's leading service providers, of its CopperStream(TM) technology for multimedia home networking. The test was conducted with equipment incorporating CopperGate's CG3010 chipset developed for the distribution of high-speed IP data such as HDTV, VoIP and Internet data over existing coax cables and phone lines.
TELUS is the largest telecommunications company in Western Canada, the second largest in the country and one of Canada's leading providers of data, Internet Protocol (IP), voice and wireless communications services. The CopperStream technology was validated operating over coax cables in lab and field tests of 38 homes.
"We were very pleased with the field test results," said Ira Rowlands, TELUS planning and engineering manager. "This type of technology enables TELUS to cost effectively distribute new IP services throughout customers' homes with the reliability they expect but without the high installation costs of running new wires."
CopperGate's CG3010 chipset, in volume production since June 2004, has been integrated into a growing number of consumer electronics products including set-top boxes, residential gateways, ONTs, Ethernet bridges and USB dongles. Providing data rates of up to 128Mbps, the technology features guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) required to transport IP video, audio and toll-quality voice in addition to high-speed Internet data. The technology operates over both existing coax cables and phone lines simultaneously, addressing the shortcomings of other entertainment home networking technologies by putting a connection near most networked entertainment, telephone, and computing equipment. CopperStream technology complies with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Recommendation G.9954 and the HomePNA 3.0 specification.
