Intraop Medical Mobetron Selected for University of Verona IORT Program
Business Wire, June 7, 2005
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intraop Medical Corporation (OTCBB:IOPM) announced today that MD51 S.r.l., the company's partner in Italy, was awarded the contract to supply a Mobetron for the intraoperative radiation therapy ("IORT") program at Azienda Ospedaliera Istituti Ospitalieri Di Verona (the "Institute"). The Institute is a consortium of three hospitals that includes the Medical School of the University of Verona. The Mobetron will be located in the Ospedale Borgo Trento in an operating room that will be dedicated to IORT treatments. The Mobetron at Ospedale Borgo Trento, scheduled for delivery in July 2005, will be the second Mobetron in Italy and the sixth such system in Europe.
The Mobetron is a proprietary medical device providing IORT treatment for cancerous tumors. For many types of tumors, IORT treatment can dramatically improve cancer survival rates and local control of the disease. IORT treatment has been in use since the 1970's, but development of the Mobetron has made IORT practical to apply. The Mobetron is a light-weight, mobile, shelf-shielding device that eliminates the logistical challenges of administering IORT.
"In Italy, IORT has already become an important component of cancer treatment. If they don't already have it, most major hospitals have plans to acquire IORT treatment capability. For those that already have IORT capability, the larger centers might need more than one system as IORT is integrated into the treatment of more common cancers such as breast, lung and prostate. We believe that the Mobetron can best serve this growing demand," said Ernesto Lanzotti, President of MD51.
Dr. Sergio Maluta, chief of Radiation Oncology and Dr. Giorgio Chierego, chief of Medical Physics at the Institute, said, "We are looking forward to close working relationships with all of the IORT International Community to develop IORT protocols. We are pleased to be part of this growing field and look forward to working with other Mobetron users to develop IORT to its full potential."
"Italy is a very important market for us," said Donald A. Goer, President and CEO of Intraop Medical. "Cancer specialists there are convinced that IORT has a role to play in the treatment of their cancer patients. We are pleased that such a prominent center has selected the Mobetron, and we look forward to working with Verona and our other European colleagues to further establish the benefits of IORT in the treatment of cancer."
About Intraop Medical Corporation
Intraop Medical Corporation was formed in April 1993 to develop, manufacture, market and service the Mobetron, a mobile electron beam system designed for IORT treatment of cancer, coronary/vascular restenosis and other medical applications. Unlike other IORT systems, the Mobetron uses several patented technologies to allow IORT to be applied without shielding to the operating room. The Mobetron can be moved between operating rooms or even between hospitals, thereby increasing the systems utilization and cost effectiveness. Intraop is a publicly traded company (OTCBB:IOPM).
