Intellon Introduces World's First Hybrid Networking Solution for IPTV, Extending Powerline Solution to Coax

Business Wire, June 7, 2005

CHICAGO -- Proven Industry HomePlug(R) Standard Processor Utilizes Unique Coupler Design Allowing Stable Hybrid Connectivity

Intellon Corporation, the world leader in powerline communications, today announced the world's first hybrid coax-powerline networking solution for the distribution of IPTV and other networked video content throughout the home. The new solution uses a unique Intellon coupler design that allows a single industry standard HomePlug processor to achieve hybrid connectivity between both powerline and coax home networks. Intellon will conduct a live demo of this new solution at this year's SUPERCOMM, which will take place in its booth, #68040.

"A hybrid networking solution provides the best of both worlds for in-home, triple-play networking needs," said Cameron McCaskill, vice president of business development, Intellon Corporation. "Several major operators have asked us for a solution that allows a single Intellon HomePlug IC to be used for communications over powerlines or coax wiring or over a hybrid network that combines both media. As we built our technology to provide rock-solid performance in the harsh powerline environment, extending our signal to the shielded coax medium was actually quite simple. The magic of our solution is the robustness of our HomePlug technology over powerline and coax and the way we couple to the coax and hybrid networks to provide optimal performance with a single baseband IC."

Intellon's HomePlug 1.0 ICs enable powerline communications at rates up to 14 megabits per second (Mbps) with encryption security, for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), data networking and broadband extension. Intellon recently introduced a new 85Mbps powerline networking chipset, the INT5500CS, which is fully compliant with the HomePlug 1.0 specification. This HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo chipset offers the higher bandwidth performance necessary to drive next-generation home entertainment applications such as standard definition in-home video provisioning, IPTV and whole-house audio distribution. Intellon's highly anticipated, next generation chipset, the INT6000, will use the 200Mbps PHY rate HomePlug AV standard to transmit multiple standard-definition (SD) and high definition (HD) video streams, as well as enabling data and audio applications, over home powerlines.
