Business Wire, June 8, 2005

PHILADELPHIA -- In eleven days, the BIO 2005 Annual International Convention will be held in Philadelphia, June 19-22, when, according to the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PCVB), more than 18,000 attendees are expected to the region using more than 23,000 room nights and creating an economic impact greater than $35 million.

BIO and the Philadelphia hospitality industry are expecting to host the largest biotechnology meeting in its 19-year history. The PCVB, the City of Philadelphia, Select Greater Philadelphia and Innovation Philadelphia have been working together to make sure the attendees to the convention have a positive experience while here and leave a lasting legacy of business opportunities behind.

BIO represents more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations in 48 U.S. states and 33 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of health care, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. The program includes more than 150 educational sessions and workshops on topics, including industrial and environmental applications, finance, science, manufacturing, food and agriculture, vaccines, and business development by more than 1,000 speakers.

"We welcome the opportunity to host and showcase the strengths of the biotechnology industry in our city and region," said Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street. "Our region has all of the competitive advantages of a biotech capital, with a large nucleus of major pharmaceutical companies, vibrant academic institutions and a workforce skilled in life sciences. We are hopeful that the BIO conference will result in a direct long-term impact on our thriving technology-based economy, producing a win-win situation for the City and the entire greater Philadelphia region."

Since the convention was booked in October 2001, the convention has outgrown the current size of the PCC and as a result, surrounding hotels will be utilized for additional meeting space. Attendees from 45 countries have already registered, and attendees from 15 more are expected. Twenty-five official foreign delegations, including Australia, India, Japan and many European countries, will attend and up to 100 public officials from 20 countries are expected. For the first time at a BIO annual meeting, the European Union will play a significant role in addition to sending a delegation. A complete list of official delegations can be found at http://www.bio.org/events/2005/programs/delegation.asp.> "The excellent program we have planned, in combination with all of the wonderful things that our Philadelphia partners have, will give us one of our best conventions yet," said Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of BIO. "The greater Philadelphia area is a global center for medical research with an entrepreneurial spirit that is fostering a strong and emerging biotechnology industry. The Philadelphia area is home to many top-tier universities and research centers - in 2004 alone over $810 million in NIH grants and contracts were won by local universities and companies. Many large U.S. pharmaceutical companies are also located within a 50-mile radius of the city, so there's a strong biotech-pharma partnership."

"Biotechnology and other life sciences are an economic development focus for Philadelphia, and our goal is to maximize the opportunity before a captive audience of many of the senior executives of the world's biotech and pharmaceutical companies," Mayor Street added.
