StoreAge Provides Switzerland's Leading Universities with Advanced Storage Management Solutions

Business Wire, March 15, 2005

ZURICH, Switzerland -- StoreAge Networking Technologies, an innovator in enterprise SAN storage management and advanced multi-tiered, data protection solutions, today announced that The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is using the StoreAge SVM(TM) to improve its SAN storage management. The deployment was led by ABC Systems, StoreAge's partner in Switzerland.

The FGCZ (www.fgcz.ethz.ch) is a jointly sponsored state-of-the-art facility of the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich. Providing ready access to the latest technologies of transcriptomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics technology to research groups of both Institutions, the FGCZ allows researchers to cope with rapid technology development and information expansion, as well as with the highly-competitive nature of modern biological research.

Aiming to improve SAN management and improve the usage of its storage resources, the FGCZ chose StoreAge's SVM (Storage Virtualization Manager). The organization's fail-safe SAN now consists of IBM xSeries file, database, and backup servers in a Microsoft Windows environment and different classes of storage systems. The system is configured with redundancy for high availability.

"The SVM is extremely useful for expanding file and database capacity online, as per our needs," explained Dr. Ralph Schlapbach, Managing Director of FGCZ. "Furthermore, we can now implement LAN-free and server-less backup, with no impact on production servers. We are very pleased with this solution and its implementation by ABC Systems, which has a professional team of experts who have provided us with great service."

Alexander Ruebensaal, CEO of ABC Systems, added: "In addition to the ease of storage management, SVM also has proven its universal scalability functions. StoreAge exceeds the pure capacity expansion option by integrating different storage manufacturers and technologies like FC and SATA under a single umbrella of management. This allows the FGCZ to always choose storage arrays that cover their specific needs at best price/performance ratio. The functional scalability includes all kind of SAN services like snapshots, copying as well as synchronous and asynchronous mirroring just to be called on demand."

Dani Naor, vice president of business development at StoreAge, said: "We are happy to have the FGCZ as our valued customer, and to see a growing number of academic institutions using SVM in their very demanding environments to serve a large variety of applications. StoreAge supports many academic organizations around the world, and encourages using SVM and StoreAge applications in such environments. This successful installation is yet another milestone in our consistently growing European customer base."

About ABC Systems AG, Switzerland

ABC Systems was founded in 1981 as an independent system house to design and implement optimized IT infrastructures. Customers are served from offices at Schlieren-Zurich and Berne by three areas of activities: a) education, b) consulting and services, c) competence centers that focus since 1998 on clustering (Linux, Microsoft, Novell) and storage (IBM TSSC ). The main strength can be summarized as "What ABC implements, ABC also trains and vice versa". This creates high levels of skills and competences.
