FusionOne Helps Keep Mobile Phone Address Books From Falling into the Wrong Hands; Boosts Security Features of MightyBackup with 'Self Destruct' Function

Business Wire, March 2, 2005

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- FusionOne, a developer of premium mobile services, has added a new security feature to its mobile address book backup service, MightyBackup. 'Self Destruct' enables subscribers to immediately erase the contents of their mobile phone address books in the case of loss or theft. A back-up copy of the address book, which is permanently stored in a Web account, can then be downloaded onto a new phone or reloaded onto the old phone upon recovery.

To erase the contents of their mobile address books, customers simply log onto their MightyBackup Web accounts at www.mightybackup.com and select the Self Destruct option from the menu of features. FusionOne's server will immediately 'wake up' the phone wirelessly and delete the entire address book, eliminating the risk of exposing contact information of family, friends and business associates.

"Mobile address books are frequently more valuable to consumers than the phone itself, so users need a way to safeguard their mobile contacts. Instances of lost phones and hacked address books are becoming more and more common these days, and whether it is a celebrity or a next-door neighbor who is affected, these are stories that everyone can relate to," said Rick Onyon, founder and CEO of FusionOne. "In addition to backing up their address books, MightyBackup gives subscribers the peace of mind of knowing that regardless of what happens to their phones, they will never lose the contact information stored inside. The 'Self Destruct' feature enhances that feeling of security by ensuring that address books will never be out in the open."

Research conducted by FusionOne(1) discovered that 43% of people have either lost their phones or had them stolen at least once (particularly men, who are 30% more likely to lose their phones according to a separate FusionOne poll(2)). With 30% of people not having a copy of their mobile phone address book saved anywhere else, many of those numbers are lost altogether.

MightyBackup is a wireless application that securely connects a mobile phone's address book to a secure server, safeguarding the contact information against phone loss, damage or theft, and eliminates the need to manually transfer contacts when a phone is replaced or upgraded. Developed and hosted by FusionOne, MightyBackup was recently re-branded and launched on Verizon's Get It Now(R) Network as Backup Assistant. MightyBackup is also available on other carriers such as Alltel, Western Wireless, Cellular One and Midwest Wireless.
