ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Marquee Content Now Available from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films, Dimension Films, Cartoon Network and NASCAR.com
Broadening its array of broadband video on demand (VoD) programming, Cdigix, the leading provider of legal digital media to directly serve the college marketplace, today announced that it has secured licensing agreements with two of the world's preeminent media companies, Buena Vista Pay TV and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.).
As a result of the deals brokered directly with each media company, Cdigix's broadband VoD service, called Cflix, now offers a greatly expanded catalog of premier entertainment and news programming, including full-length feature films, television shows, interviews and news specials. The programming, which is currently being rolled out, is distributed over a local area network (LAN), yielding a fast and secure way for students to access legal, downloadable content that doesn't slow down the university's Internet connection.
"The college marketplace, comprised of passionate movie fans, is a substantial and important audience for the motion picture industry," said Dan Glickman, president and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. "By forging relationships with the studios and allowing college students to legally download films, Cdigix is making significant strides in our ongoing efforts to leverage new distribution channels in a safe and lawful way."
The licensing agreement with Buena Vista Pay TV includes content from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films and Dimension Films. The deal encompasses films new to the residential VoD window, including Around the World in 80 Days, starring Jackie Chan; Hero, starring Jet Li; the two-time Oscar-winning film The Incredibles; Mr. 3000, starring Bernie Mac; and The Village, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Numerous other films from BV Pay TV are being distributed through Cflix, including the thriller I'm Not Scared and the historical drama Miracle at Oxford.
"One of Disney's key priorities is to leverage new technologies aggressively, effectively and efficiently to expand distribution," said Dan Cohen, senior vice president and general manager of Pay Television for Buena Vista Television. "This new relationship confirms our belief that the value of Disney's portfolio of leading brands and content will steadily increase as new technological platforms evolve."
ESPN is also providing Cflix with programming, including episodes of the popular poker tournament shows World Series of Poker 2004 and No Limit Hold 'Em 2004 as well as its new fictional poker series TILT. Special programming from ESPN includes the documentary 3, about Dale Earnhardt, and the 2003 ACC Basketball Championship.
The TBS, Inc. relationship encompasses programming from its Cartoon Network and NASCAR.com properties, both of which enjoy a substantial college following. Under the terms of the TBS, Inc. deal, Cflix subscribers can access multiple shows broadcast during Cartoon Network's popular late-night "Adult Swim" programming block, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force; Big O; The Brak Show; Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law; Home Movies; Sealab 2021; and Venture Bros. Other shows are expected to be added soon. In addition, the broad range of programming content from TBS, Inc.'s wildly popular NASCAR.com includes racing highlights from races such as the Daytona 500; interviews with drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon; and various awards ceremonies.
"We are pleased to partner with Cdigix to further extend the strong brands of 'Adult Swim' and NASCAR to college students through this innovative technology," said Dennis Quinn, executive vice president, business development, TBS, Inc. "Turner Broadcasting is consistently embracing new technologies to better understand how our brands and programming can be enhanced across multiple platforms."
"We are thrilled to offer our audience A-list programming directly from two of the most trusted names in entertainment, Disney and Turner Broadcasting," said Brett Goldberg, president of Cdigix. "Students today not only use computers for schoolwork but also as the main multimedia center in their residence halls. Cdigix is dedicated to providing a complete digital media experience for them."
To help mark the debut of the new programming, Cdigix is offering a special monthly subscription rate of $5.99 for Cflix this semester, down from $9.99, giving students complete access to the library of subscription on-demand programming. Individual pay-per-view content on Cflix ranges from $1.99 to $3.99.
Cdigix is the leading provider of secure, legal digital entertainment and educational media to directly serve the college market.
