NuView Expands Market and Strengthens Leadership Position in Heterogeneous Enterprise Data Management with Release of StorageX 5.5
Business Wire, March 8, 2005
HOUSTON -- Industry Leading Enterprise Data Management Software Delivers Grid Storage and Increases Multi-Protocol Integration with Addition of Linux and UNIX Support
NuView Inc. today reached a critical landmark in its commitment to delivering and supporting unified data management for multi-vendor, multi-protocol storage environments by announcing the availability of StorageX(R) version 5.5 (StorageX 5.5).
This release enables enterprises, for the first time, to build a unified global namespace across CIFS and NFS protocols and perform policy-based heterogeneous data management across Linux, Solaris, Microsoft Windows, NetApp and others. Administrators using StorageX 5.5 and its patented global namespace capabilities can now centrally unify CIFS and NFS storage resources and allocate them to applications and users transparently and on demand.
"NuView's StorageX 5.5 release deserves to be treated as a full lifecycle NAS management platform. Because of their support for both Windows and UNIX environments, heterogeneous data classification and movement, NuView's long-term investment in developing a unified global namespace is paying dividends," said Brad O'Neill, senior analyst, Taneja Group. "In 2005, finding strategic solutions for file management will become a top priority for enterprises. As customers examine their options, there is no question that NuView will attract new enterprise customer attention due to the integrated capabilities of StorageX."
StorageX 5.5 continues to build NuView's vision of the global namespace as the integration point of storage and security in the enterprise. Administrators are now able to use policies to dynamically build global namespaces based on the security of the underlying objects. This innovation will help enterprises provide end users with better access to their data as well as provide a mechanism for auditing security issues.
StorageX provides administrators with enterprise data management applications integral to meeting grid storage data management requirements such as: data migration and consolidation, business continuity, storage optimization, data lifecycle management, remote site data management and data classification and reporting.
"StorageX 5.5 offers a unique set of features for grid storage environments," said Mike Fisch, Senior Analyst with The Clipper Group, technology acquisition consultants based in Wellesley, MA. "StorageX centrally and automatically manages file storage allocation and utilization across the enterprise. Administrators can significantly lower storage management costs by reducing administrative time, as storage resources are automatically, intelligently and transparently configured and reconfigured on demand."
"The compelling benefits of StorageX have convinced us that grid storage is the next step in effectively managing our storage infrastructure," said Leon Verriere, manager, Systems Engineering at Mohawk Industries. "StorageX has enabled us to save time and money by quickly rolling out an enterprise-wide global namespace. The benefits of this solution are immediate and have already made it an integral part in the success of our IT team."
The specific enhancements featured in StorageX 5.5 are:
UNIFIED DATA MANAGEMENT FOR WINDOWS, UNIX AND LINUX PLATFORMS
Using StorageX, enterprises can reduce data management costs substantially by employing consistent methods for data management, replication and migration needs across UNIX, Linux and Windows, thereby eliminating the need to purchase and manage point solutions per platform. The unification provided by StorageX allows for the dynamic and non-disruptive provisioning of storage volumes and facilitates a utility-based storage model.
INTEGRATION OF SECURITY AND DATA ACCESS INFRASTRUCTURE
StorageX enables administrators to build and manage global namespaces based on the underlying security, or group permissions, assigned to the data. In addition, changes in security are dynamically reflected in the StorageX Global Namespace to ensure consistency between data access and underlying security attributes of the data.
REPORTING ENHANCEMENTS
Finally, StorageX offers an improved interface for creating, modifying and deleting reports, as well as a File Differences Report which enables administrators to quickly identify any errors which may have occurred during a data migration or server consolidation.

About the StorageX Global Namespace
The StorageX Global Namespace does for files what DNS does for networking - it provides a directory service. This directory service can deliver location-independent services to users and applications across multiple, heterogeneous, distributed file systems. With the StorageX Global Namespace in place, an administrator is able to distribute files in a way that optimizes performance and capacity utilization; clients then access the files via the namespace. When storage is added or consolidated and files are moved or renamed, clients are automatically redirected to the new location, often unaware that the data was moved. This approach dramatically simplifies network data management, as it permanently eliminates the need for desktop reconfiguration, drive letter remapping or modification of login scripts when storage is reconfigured. The StorageX Global Namespace can scale to support an entire corporate environment.
