RWD Technologies and Interwise Enable University of Dayton to Deliver Online Master's Degree Program for Delphi Corporation; Custom-Designed Master's Program Provides Delphi Employees with Flexible Format
Business Wire, May 11, 2005
BALTIMORE -- RWD Technologies, Inc. (RWD) and Interwise, the leader in true enterprise conferencing, announced that they are enabling the University of Dayton to provide a real-time, online, distance-learning Master's degree program for employees at Delphi Corporation -- a Troy, Michigan-based provider of mobile electronics, transportation components and systems technology. RWD is supplying implementation and ongoing support services for Interwise's ECP Connect conferencing software. Delphi's online Master's degree program, which can be completed in three years, was accredited by the North Central Association as a distance learning program in December 2004.
Working with the engineering leadership within Delphi, the University of Dayton -- Ohio's largest private university -- developed the online program to make it possible and convenient for Delphi employees to earn Master of Science degrees in either engineering management or management science from Delphi company sites worldwide. The real-time courses, which are designed to provide an educational complement to Delphi's core engineering excellence initiatives, are offered at lunchtime for employees within the Eastern Time zone. Students who cannot participate can download the recorded sessions to watch later.
Dave L. Smith, a Delphi employee who is nearing graduation from the University of Dayton with a Master's degree in engineering management, said, "All of the staff at the University of Dayton in the engineering management department made it possible for me to excel in my studies by providing a network system that allows all Delphi students to view recordings of the course materials. Due to my job requirements, there are times when I am unable to attend live Internet classes. However, the online system has allowed me to download the class lectures and save them to compact disks. This enables me to view the lectures in the evenings when I am at home and on weekends. It is working extremely well for me."
The online eLearning environment is designed to replicate a traditional classroom setting. For example, students can ask questions in real-time, and instructors use a whiteboard to share information with students. To make the program possible, RWD provided consultation, training, and enablement services for Interwise's software, which provides web conferencing, voice conferencing, online meetings, seminars and classes, as well as on-demand recordings, in a single, integrated, IP-based platform.
"The combination of RWD products and services and Interwise software has provided us with the capability to successfully deliver remote, live, online education," said Joseph Litko, associate professor, Engineering Management and Systems, University of Dayton. "We believe the RWD and Interwise solution makes a perfect combination and we are looking for other possible opportunities to deliver real-time distance learning both in the U.S. and overseas using these services."
"By collaborating with RWD on this project, the two companies together delivered the ideal solution for the University of Dayton," said John Donnelly III, Vice President of North American Sales and Business Development for Interwise. "Our software and services are highly complementary to RWD's eLearning and process improvement products, and the two can be seamlessly integrated."
Although this is the first online Master's degree offered by the University of Dayton, RWD has been developing and delivering eLearning services for the university since 2001. Beth Ann Pelegan, Division Director of Applied Technology Solutions at RWD, said, "The University of Dayton is a perfect showcase to demonstrate the kind of learning solutions that RWD can develop and implement. We recognize the expertise Interwise has in the Internet-based eLearning and training arena and believe that together we can offer a very effective and comprehensive live, online learning experience."
