Business Wire, May 11, 2005
CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- Image Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq:DISK), a leading independent licensee, producer and distributor of home entertainment programming in North America, today announced it will be supporting the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format for Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) device.
Image's initial North America UMD rollout will take place on June 28th and consist of more than a dozen exclusively licensed or distributed programs. Titles released by Image will encompass many genres including feature films, music performances, comedy and television programming. Image's first slate of releases will include "The Hillz" with Paris Hilton, "Short Circuit," the IMAX classic "Magic of Flight," Jamie Foxx in "I Might Need Security," "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel," Bruce Brown's surf classic "Endless Summer," "Godsmack Live" and more. Image expects to announce new UMD releases monthly.
"Image is recognized as a major independent provider of entertainment on DVD, and we are looking to occupy a similar position with the new and exciting UMD format," said Martin W. Greenwald, President and CEO of Image Entertainment. "Supporting UMD will enable Image to create additional revenue from our existing library of content, and to reach a segment of game retailers looking to stock both PSP hardware and UMD software."
Greenwald continued, "Later this year as Sony releases PSP players in other parts of the world, Image will release UMD software in those territories accordingly. These international opportunities are exciting, and will tap into a previously non-existent revenue stream."
