IIJ Adds New Function to IIJ Secure Remote Access Service; New Function Links IIJ Service with Customer's Authentication Server

Business Wire, May 23, 2005

TOKYO -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ:IIJI), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it will upgrade the IIJ Secure Remote Access Service to provide the Authentication Service Link Option, which creates a link between IIJ's service and the authentication server on the customer's network when users access the network remotely.

IIJ Secure Remote Access creates an encrypted connection through VPN tunneling using L2TP/IPsec and PPTP, which enables secure access to the company network over the Internet. Earlier implementations of this service required the creation and administration of remote access accounts for use with dialup connections and VPN tunneling, but the Authentication Server Link Option creates a connection to the customer's authentication server using protocols like RADIUS and LDAP. This system makes it possible to use a variety of authentication methods, including one-time passwords, which are extremely popular because of their strong authentication infrastructure, and Microsoft's Active Directory, which centralizes user account administration.

Though remote access to company mail servers and groupware provides tremendous convenience and flexibility, it also requires extremely strong security measures. The IIJ Secure Remote Access Service provides communication relay at the application level, and through strict control over available servers and protocols for each user group, the risk of unauthorized access and leaking of confidential information is minimized, providing the ideal enterprise security solution. The Authentication Service Link Option increases the power of this service by expanding the number of authentication methods available and enabling comprehensive security measures in a remote access environment.

Along with this new option, IIJ is providing a new Rule Viewer feature that allows existing service users to view the access control rules on their account using a Web interface. The administrators report has been expanded to include an Account Information page for each account as well as activity logs and other information.

IIJ will continue to upgrade its services and provide more users with an even better Internet environment.
