Siemens Enters BPON Market with Last-Mile Fiber Access Solution

Business Wire, May 23, 2005

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Siemens Communications, Inc., a leader in the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) market, today announced a comprehensive new family of Siemens(R) broadband passive optical network (BPON) products that enable service providers to offer cost-effective and faster deployments to customers with last-mile bandwidth challenges. The Siemens BPON portfolio provides a flexible and robust set of fiber to the premise (FTTP) optical network terminal (ONT) and optical network unit (ONU) solutions.

With six different product options, the Siemens BPON family supports multiple environments such as single-family residences, businesses and multi-dwelling housing units. The standards-based design of the Siemens BPON family also supports myriad deployment model options, including copper wire, Ethernet and cable capabilities for truly integrated data, voice and video services. Residential and business customers benefit from single-provider access to the home and a single connection for emerging services such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), Internet protocol television (IPTV) and other high-speed broadband offerings.

"Siemens' entry into the BPON market strengthens the company's position as a provider of strategic end-to-end solutions for the digital home," said Ron Westfall, broadband principal analyst with Current Analysis. "The combination of multiple options, future-proof features, high performance and cost effectiveness makes the Siemens BPON family an appealing choice for service providers looking to diversify their service offerings to customers."

Other Siemens BPON family features include:

--High throughput with up to 100 Mbps on an Ethernet port and up to 622 Mbps over a full service access network (FSAN)-compatible fiber connection.

--Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) capable to support current and next-generation network requirements.

--Integrated radio frequency (RF) return channel for integration with subscriber facilities.

--Power management lifeline services via battery backup and battery monitoring.

--Hardened enclosure for outdoor environments.

"With the introduction of the BPON family, Siemens continues to advance its fiber solutions strategy and our commitment to the LifeWorks@Com(TM) vision of unified communication experiences across networks, devices and geographies," said Harald Braun, president of Siemens Carrier Networks, Siemens Communications, Inc. "This is a significant last-mile solution for advancing the triple-play alignment of data, voice and video services without bandwidth constraints."
