Winners Announced In 2005 INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards Competition

DALLAS -- The 70th INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards, honoring excellence in newspaper marketing worldwide, were presented May 10-11 before nearly 400 delegates to the INMA World Congress of Newspaper Marketing in Las Vegas.

In 2005, the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards Competition generated 1,045 entries from 165 newspapers from 29 different countries around the world. The judging took place in Miami on February 11 where a team of high-level advertising, newspaper, and marketing professionals judged the competition. The judges selected first prizes and finalists awarded with a certificate of merit for each of the categories in three circulation groups in 20 categories - under 75,000, 75,000-300,000, and over 300,000.

The Best of Show award was presented to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, based in Frankfurt, Germany, for an advertising print brochure titled "More Success." Second place for "Best of Show" was given to Cape Argus in Cape Town, South Africa, for an in-newspaper circulation promotion titled "1 Paper 2 Editions (Lotto/Ship/Bride)." Meanwhile, third place for "Best of Show" was presented to the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Richmond, Virginia, USA, for a television promotion titled "You Need to Know Stuff."

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's "Best of Show" puts the German newspaper among elite company. Recent recipients of this coveted honor include The New York Times in the United States, Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, Berliner Zeitung in Germany, Cape Times in South Africa, The Australian in Australia, The New Zealand Herald, and Goteborgs-Posten in Sweden.

Several newspapers won more than one award, led by A Critica, Brasil with five awards, The New Zealand Herald with four awards, and The Daily Telegraph & The Sunday Telegraph in Australia and Cape Argus in South Africa with three awards each.

Judging annually is based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results. Entries are judged in comparison to other entries.

The chairman of the 2005 awards competition was Marti Buscaglia, president and publisher of the Duluth News-Tribune in the United States, and a member of the INMA Board of Directors.

Awards were announced at the INMA World Congress at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and presented to recipients by INMA President Eivind Thomsen of Schibsted in Oslo, Norway.

INMA is an international, non-profit association dedicated to promoting advanced marketing principles within the newspaper industry. INMA has more than 1,000 members in 68 countries.
