TI Selects Cypress USB Controllers for Portable Digital Music Player Design; USB Controller and Host Offer OEMs Features, Flexibility; Recharge from USB Cable While Downloading Music
Business Wire, May 3, 2005
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY), the market leader in USB, today announced that Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) has selected its EZ-USB FX2LP(TM) and EZ-OTG(TM) USB peripheral/host controllers for inclusion in the TI TMS320DA255 DSP-based reference design for portable digital music players.
TI's reference design is a turnkey, manufacturable reference design for portable hard-disk drive-based music players. It includes a 5-GB HDD, integrated FM tuner, microphone and USB host. Devices using this design can play up to 15 hours of music in MP3, WMA and WAV formats, as well as display JPEG and MPEG-4 photos.
The DA255 reference design relies on two Cypress USB controllers to connect to other devices. Cypress's EZ-USB FX2LP (CY7C68013A) is a flexible, high-speed USB 2.0 controller with the industry's lowest power consumption. USB peripherals using the EZ-USB FX2LP controller -- including mass storage devices and personal media players -- are able to operate off of the power of the USB bus. EZ-OTG (CY7C67200), based on the USB On-The-Go (OTG) protocol, enables direct connectivity between portable devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, video and still cameras, MP3 players and mass storage peripherals.
"We needed our DA255 reference design to be low power and high performance, yet cost effective," said Raj Chirayil, marketing manager, Portable Audio and Infotainment business, Texas Instruments. "Cypress's USB products fit our requirements perfectly. They provide us with both the features and the headroom to lead the market today and down the road."
"We are very pleased to have collaborated with TI on this innovative design," said Bassil El-Kadi, product manager in Cypress's Consumer and Computation Division. "Our EZ-USB FX2LP and EZ-OTG products give the design a great deal of flexibility. In addition to downloading music in various formats, users can download photos from their cell phones; save music from the FM tuner to internal storage; or display MPEG movies from their digital still cameras. We believe the combination of features and flexibility that our USB products provide will help power the dramatic growth of the portable media player market."
