AirDefense and Engim Partner to Deliver the Industry's First Intrusion Prevention System Embedded on WLAN Chip
Business Wire, May 3, 2005
LAS VEGAS -- Platform to Provide Increased Security and 24 x 7 Real-time Monitoring: Deployment and Operational Support Costs Significantly Reduced
AirDefense, the leader in anywhere, anytime wireless security and monitoring, and Engim, Inc., a leading developer of wireless LAN infrastructure silicon solutions, today announced the industry's first and only security platform that embeds an intrusion prevention system (IPS) on a WLAN chipset for increased wireless security. The AirDefense-Engim multi-function platform enables 24 x 7 real-time intrusion detection, prevention and monitoring of access points and any wireless device with built-in Engim chips to provide monitoring data to AirDefense's Enterprise.
The integrated platform will be available to network systems manufacturers for integration into 802.11 access points and infrastructure products to provide IT managers with unprecedented WLAN security coupled with superior economics. The platform enables multi-function access points (APs) with integrated security sensors and dedicated Wi-Fi monitoring of all channels for real-time security without disrupting end-user traffic. The platform also provides wideband RF monitoring capability to capture and analyze raw RF spectrum.
In addition, the AirDefense-Engim multi-function platform dramatically improves operational performance, security, deployment and management of WLANs while providing over 50 percent reduction in equipment, installation and maintenance costs by offering a comprehensive security solution and uninterrupted AP communication in a single WLAN infrastructure device.
The AirDefense-Engim multi-function platform incorporates Engim's award-winning EN-3002, the industry's first Intelligent Wideband WLAN chipset that enables simultaneous communications for voice and data at peak performance while providing IPS sensor capabilities across multiple channels. This capability stems from the chipset's ability to intelligently capture and manipulate large bands of wireless spectrum to overcome complex RF interference issues in real time. The chip is powered by the AirDefense's market leading intrusion prevention technology that will continuously monitor all RF spectrum activities enabling advanced rogue detection, policy enforcement, intrusion prevention and operational health monitoring of the WLAN.
"With the rapid proliferation of wireless threats, advanced full-time wireless monitoring and intrusion prevention has become table stakes to enterprises in deploying wireless LANs," said Anil Khatod, CEO of AirDefense. "The AirDefense-Engim platform combines best-in-class full-time wireless security and performance management with wireless access in a single cost-effective platform."
Engim's unique wideband WLAN chipset enables simultaneous and asynchronous support for multi-channel communications within the same band, which is not possible with other WLAN radio chipsets. The three radios built into the single platform offers a unique opportunity to dedicate one of the radios to monitoring and intrusion prevention while the remaining radios provide mission critical access to data and VoWLAN. In addition, a continuous RF Spectrum Monitor detects and identifies both 802.11 and non-802.11 energy by identifying interferences, including Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz telephones and microwave ovens. In total, this platform represents the next major step in integrated WLAN infrastructure products.
"By having separate radios to perform specific tasks in a single device, the integrated platform can prevent a wide range of wireless intrusions while allowing continuous data communication," said Pete Lindstrom of Spire Security. "The integration of these solutions should expand and further strengthen end-user security, help consolidate and simplify overall network management, and offer tangible gains in terms of equipment, deployment and operations costs."
The integrated platform will be available to infrastructure vendors summer 2005.
