Business Wire, May 4, 2005
LONDON -- NDS Group plc (NASDAQ: NNDS)(EURONEXT: NNDS):
Highlights:
--NDS PVR technology to be made available to Viasat's digital subscribers
--Viasat represents new XTV(TM) win for NDS and further enhances existing relationship
--Viasat to benefit from new revenue stream
--Viasat subscribers to be offered new functionality with PVR solution
NDS Group plc, the leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, today announced that Modern Times Group's Viasat Broadcasting, a leading digital satellite pay-TV broadcaster in the Nordic region, has selected XTV(TM), the NDS personal video recorder solution.
Using the NDS XTV technology, subscribers will be able to pause, fast-forward and rewind live programs, record one program while watching another, manage the content that has been saved to their set-top box, and easily find programs - live or stored - even if the programming schedule changes. When this new service is launched later this year, subscribers will be able to record over 60 hours of content, directly on to their hard drive in the set-top box. Viasat has 693,000 digital pay-TV subscribers in the Nordic region. Broadcasters have found that churn rates for PVR customers are lower than the average for the whole subscriber base.
Hans-Holger Albrecht, President and Chief Executive Officer of Modern Times Group, commented: "We constantly strive to make our offering to pay-TV subscribers more entertaining and to broaden the availability of our premium movie, sports and documentary content. Personal Video Recorders will enable Viasat subscribers to take control of their viewing schedules and watch what they want when they want. This is the latest step in our efforts to increase choice for our TV viewers and will add a new revenue stream to our business."
David Nabozny, Vice President NDS Europe said: "We are delighted that Viasat has chosen our unique XTV personal video recorder technology. This greatly enhances our existing relationship with Viasat, following the successful completion of the switch of Viasat's subscriber base to NDS VideoGuard conditional access encryption technology last year. "
A unique feature of XTV is the way content is securely stored and managed by the NDS VideoGuard(R) conditional access technology. Viewers can easily record pay-per-view movies and sports - but will only be charged if they actually choose to view these shows. This improves buy rates without compromising the business and revenue protection requirements of the content owners.
