Occam Networks Adds Industry First Emergency Stand Alone to its BLC 6000 System; Provides Local Station Calls and calls to Emergency Services in the Event of a Network Outage

Business Wire, May 4, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Occam(R) Networks Inc. (OTCBB: OCCM), a supplier of innovative Ethernet- and IP-based loop carrier equipment to telecommunications companies worldwide, today announced an Emergency Stand Alone (ESA) feature for the company's BLC 6000(TM) System. With ESA the BLC 6000 is the first broadband loop carrier that provides emergency services calling and local station-to-station calling during network or equipment failures. The new ESA system begins field trials next week and is expected to be available in July 2005.

The ESA system supports all Occam BLC 6000 POTS lines, whether under the control of the Occam 6640 GR303 gateway or a third-party soft switch. When remote subscribers become isolated from the primary central office switch the ESA system manages call control for the isolated network segment. The system can be configured to route E911 calls to local emergency service facilities and to complete local calls, a capability unique to the Occam BLC 6000.

"The Emergency Stand Alone feature enables us to continue to deliver lifeline POTS service to our subscribers from an Ethernet- and IP-based network," said Dave Martin, Director of Technology for The Blackfoot Telecommunication Group. "It allows us to enjoy the benefits of these technologies - simplifying our access network and reducing its cost - while having the peace of mind of offering stand alone POTS service in an emergency situation."

The ESA system can also be used to replace remote switches in many network applications. When in ESA mode, the BLC 6000 supports basic call features such as Caller ID, Call Waiting and 3-Way Calling for local station-to-station calls.

The ESA system also supports multiple hunt groups for defining access to emergency services. The hunt groups enable the ESA system to support multiple remote COs and their individual local emergency service facilities. The service provider can create recorded announcements to provide subscribers with information about commonly dialed numbers and prefixes, such as long distance numbers, that are unavailable during a network outage.

"Occam is dedicated to delivering IP- and Ethernet-based products to service providers because these technologies reduce the capital and operational costs of the access network and deliver a tremendous competitive advantage," said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam. "ESA is just one example of the valuable services that can be delivered using these technologies. It is based on Voice over IP (VoIP) technology and relies on the superior IP service delivery model inherent in Occam products."

The ESA feature comes in three different models based upon the number of lines supported. Pricing for all models is available upon request.
