Santa Clara University's Markkula Center for Applied Ethics Presents Annual Ethics Outlook

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Santa Clara University's Markkula Center for Applied Ethics will present the six most important ethical issues facing Americans at its fourth annual Ethics Outlook, Nov 10 at 6.30 p.m.

The 2005-06 National Ethics Agenda calls for attention to these
    issues:

    Immigration: Should the Rules Change?

    Energy: What Is the Real Cost of Oil?

    Executive Compensation: Are Outsize Pay Packages Contributing to
    Corporate Malfeasance?

    Advise and Consent: What Are the Ethics of Confirmation?

    Students Left Behind: Is It Ever Okay to Give Up on a Child?

    Heroism: On Whose Shoulders Should We Stand?

    The panel presenting the 2005-06 National Ethics Agenda includes:

    --  David Berger, chair, mergers and acquisitions litigation
        practice, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

    --  David DeCosse, director, campus ethics program; editor of But
        Was It Just? Reflections on the Morality of the Persian Gulf
        War (Doubleday)

    --  Steve Johnson, director of character education; developer,
        character-based literacy curriculum used throughout California

    --  Scott LaBarge, assistant professor of philosophy and classics
        at SCU;

    --  Judy Nadler, senior fellow in government ethics; former chair,
        U.S. Conference of Mayors Standing Committee on Energy

    --  Terri Peretti, chair, political science professor at SCU, and
        author of In Defense of a Political Court (Princeton
        University Press)

Kirk O. Hanson, executive director of the Markkula Ethics Center will moderate the discussion in the TV studio of the arts and sciences building on the SCU campus.

The Outlook is developed by the Center's Emerging Issues Group, a collection of staff, scholars, and Advisory Board members who meet weekly to consider seriously the role that ethics plays in current events. In past years, the Outlook has focused attention on "Security and Terrorism," "Exploring the Limits on Scientific Freedom," and "Addressing Disparities in Income and Wealth."
