WHAT:
Ketumile Masire will speak on the critical political and social
achievements that have allowed Botswana to maintain a peaceful
democracy and to instigate its transition towards greater market
participation in its economy.

WHO:
Ketumile Masire started his career as a farmer and educator. He
entered politics when Botswana gained independence from British
colonial rule in 1966. Initially serving as a member of parliament,
Masire rose to become the second president of Botswana, serving from
1980 to 1998. Masire served as the first vice-chairman of the
Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1991 and as chairman of the
Eminent Personalities of the OAU Committee Investigating the
Circumstances Surrounding the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. He was also a
member of the Commonwealth Observer Group to the 1999 Nigerian
Assembly and Presidential Elections, and from 2000 to 2003 he was
facilitator for the Inter-Congolese National Dialogue.
