WatchGuard Partners with Commtouch to Provide Real-time Spam Protection; Integrates Commtouch's Anti-Spam Technology into WatchGuard Firebox X Unified Threat Management Appliances

Business Wire, Oct 24, 2005

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Commtouch(R) (Nasdaq:CTCH), the developer of ground breaking Recurrent Pattern Detection(TM) (RPD) technology for real-time anti-spam protection, announced today that its real-time malware protection technology has been implemented into WatchGuard's Firebox X Core and Peak Unified Threat Management appliances running Fireware Pro 8.2. WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:WGRD) is one of the world's leading providers of network security solutions. In Q2 2005, it was the unit leader in Unified Threat Management (UTM) in the midrange pricebands, according to leading analyst firm IDC.

By implementing Commtouch's RPD(TM) technology, WatchGuard becomes the first integrated security appliance to offer highly effective real-time protection from emerging spam outbreaks. With a proactive network-based approach, Commtouch technology detects new outbreaks as soon as they emerge, consistently delivering real-time detection and the highest spam capture rates in the industry. For more information on WatchGuard's Firebox X Core and Peak appliances, see www.watchguard.com.

"WatchGuard's number one goal is to help customers achieve stronger security, without any additional hassles," said John Stuckey, WatchGuard vice president of Marketing. "Our partnership with Commtouch is in line with this strategy and will enable us to deliver the broadest and most powerful Unified Threat Management protection in the industry."

"We see a great deal of potential in technologies such as Commtouch RPD, which uses recurrent pattern analysis to track email senders' behavior and reputation," said Richi Jennings, email security practice lead at Ferris Research. "This approach is inherently automatic, and independent of full content analysis. It is designed to detect threats in their early stages."

"We are proud that WatchGuard, one of the dominant network security players in the world, has decided to join a distinguished list of security vendors that have implemented the 'Commtouch Inside' strategy. It is a strong confirmation of our leadership," said Commtouch Executive Vice President Avner Amram. "Commtouch's RPD technology is becoming the de-facto standard for OEM implementation by security vendors: we believe that within the next few quarters no high end email security product will be complete without it.

"Appliance vendors are keen to integrate our technology not only because it is proven in taking the lead in detecting unknown threats. Compared to some highly CPU costly alternatives, the Commtouch solution, which processes 150-200 messages/second on a single machine, is ideal for high-capacity gateway products."
