Brigham and Women's Hospital honored in 2005 World Class Solution Awards; SAS Performance Management for Healthcare Manages Balanced Scorecard Initiatives
Business Wire, Oct 26, 2005
LAS VEGAS -- SAS, the leader in business intelligence, today announced that Brigham and Women's Hospital was named a winner in the Corporate Performance Management and Balanced Scorecard category of DM Review's 2005 World Class Solution Awards competition. Brigham and Women's Hospital executives and clinicians have been using SAS software since 2002 to drive proven results in their balanced scorecard efforts.
The award was presented during a ceremony at DCI's Business Intelligence & Data Warehousing Conference in September at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Orlando, Florida. On hand to receive the award were Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, Vice President for the Center for Clinical Excellence at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Melissa A. Fitzpatrick, RN, MSN, FAAN, Principal Healthcare Strategist at SAS.
"Our innovative use of scorecards places us at the forefront of an exciting new movement in the delivery of healthcare," said Sue Schade, chief information officer for Brigham and Women's Hospital. "Staff at every level - from administrators and division chiefs to individual physicians, nurses and other frontline clinicians - can see how their day-to-day efforts affect patient care and satisfaction as well as the overall financial health of our organization."
Brigham and Women's Hospital analysts monitor data from more than 50,000 inpatient discharges and more than 800,000 outpatient visits per year from more than 40 information sources. Among these sources are cost center mapping, incident reporting systems, research administration statistics and a PeopleSoft human resources system. Additional data are pulled from a variety of individual databases as varied as infection control, patient and family relations, clinical benchmarking and workers' compensation information.
With SAS Performance Management for Healthcare, Brigham and Women's Hospital team members have been able to draw correlations between metrics across and within service lines and administrative areas to solve both strategic and day-to-day problems. The balanced scorecard integrates, analyzes and distributes information to executive management, physicians and frontline employees.
Today, nearly 900 employees have access to a 35-metric hospital scorecard, as well as relevant scorecards for their own areas of clinical accountability. These employees can also view more detailed reports for each metric, such as patient satisfaction and length of stay. Moreover, members of the board of trustees have access to a quality outcomes scorecard that integrates quality metrics from each of 180 scorecards into one location for easy review.
"The World Class Solution Awards recognize organizations that use technology solutions to demonstrate a unique commitment to measurable results and long-term, sustainable business value," said Brian Cronin, publisher of DM Review. "Brigham and Women's Hospital has clearly achieved world-class results from its balanced scorecard system."
This honor marks the second consecutive year a customer using SAS performance management software has won in DM Review's World Class Solutions Awards. In 2004, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. was named a winner in the Analytic Applications category for its use of SAS Activity-Based Management.
The World Class Solution Award, a symbol of excellence within the business intelligence and data warehousing industry, originated in 1996. More than 100 entries were accepted in categories that reflect mission-critical segments of the market as determined by feedback from DM Review readers.
