Party City Corporation Calls upon Public Officials to Postpone Celebration of Halloween in Florida Counties Impacted by Hurricane Wilma
Business Wire, Oct 26, 2005
ROCKAWAY, N.J. -- Party City Corporation, America's largest party goods chain, today called upon Florida state and local officials to help children and families in areas devastated by Hurricane Wilma to enjoy a safe and happy Halloween - by moving the celebration of the holiday this year to Monday, November 14.
"Moving the celebration of Halloween by two weeks for hurricane-impacted communities makes sense for a lot of reasons," said Lisa Laube, Party City's Chief Merchandising Officer. "Many areas haven't had a chance to clean up after Wilma's destruction, so it may not be safe to go trick-or-treating on October 31. While nothing can make up for the losses suffered by many Floridians due to the hurricane, postponing the holiday would allow more time for life to return to normal so that kids and families could enjoy their Halloween celebrations. Governments will benefit from sales tax revenues generated by the extended Halloween shopping period. And, this 'gift' to the community costs virtually nothing."
Party City added that if Halloween is postponed, its corporate and franchise stores in Florida will donate a percentage of their sales between October 31 and November 14, 2005, to non-profit hurricane relief organizations. The Company hopes that a proclamation by the Governor or other public officials - rescheduling the celebration of Halloween for Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe, Collier and Lee counties - would encourage many businesses to extend their Halloween season by two weeks and make similar contributions to non-profit organizations.
"It's easy to overlook something like a Halloween celebration, what with all of the serious problems caused by Wilma. But moving the holiday festivities would help rebuild the spirit of many families who are going through difficult times," Ms. Laube said.
