Marketing American Higher Education to International Students: Philadelphia University Officials on Recruiting Tour in Japan/Korea

Business Wire, Oct 28, 2005

Drexel University:

What: Officials from five Philadelphia universities are en
route to Japan and Korea to increase Southeastern
Pennsylvania's profile as a center of excellence among
students wishing to study in the U.S. Led by Drexel
              University president Constantine Papadakis, the
delegation will meet with high school students,
administrators and educators in the two countries.

Why: The number of international students in the U.S.
declined for the first time since 1971 in the 2003-04
academic year. It has continued to decline largely due
to the "war on terrorism" and current visa procedures,
and increased competition from other English-speaking
countries. American universities in Southeastern Pa. are
responding to the challenge through a collaborative
marketing approach. It is perhaps a higher education
first. The five universities will seek to recruit
students not only to their institutions, but to Greater
Philadelphia, which has more than 80 colleges and
              universities.

Universities: Drexel, University of Pennsylvania, La Salle,
Temple--Japan Campus, and University of the Arts.

When/Where: Tokyo, Japan on October 31
              Seoul, Korea from November 1-4

Background: The trip is organized by the Knowledge Industry
Partnership (KIP),a broad-based coalition of civic,
business, government, and higher education leaders
engaged in maximizing the impact of the region's
"knowledge industry" of colleges and universities on
              Greater Philadelphia's competitive position.
Pennsylvania Economy League is a co-organizer. Its
executive director for Southeastern Pennsylvania, David
Thornburgh, is traveling with the delegation.
