International CES Announces Support for Travel Industry Job Bank to Assist Victims of Hurricane Katrina

Business Wire, Sept 15, 2005

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The following statement was issued today by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Vice President, Events and Conferences Karen Chupka, expressing support for a new job bank to help workers in the travel and tourism industry displaced by Hurricane Katrina find new employment as soon as possible. CEA produces the annual International CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow. The free job bank, www.katrinajobs.org, was developed by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), in partnership with the Travel & Tourism Coalition and the Travel Business Roundtable. The site will launch September 15, 2005.

"The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is proud to support this humanitarian relief effort. So many good people in the travel and hospitality industry have been impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Many not only lost their homes but also their jobs. In some cases, their places of employment - hotels, resorts, conference and convention centers throughout the region - may never reopen. This displacement and economic devastation will have a strong negative impact on the $16 billion travel industry in the affected region as well as the travel, tourism and conventions industry throughout the U.S.

"As the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow, we rely on the work of the travel and tourism industry. We feel the pain incurred by the thousands who have lost their livelihood. I believe this strong joint effort will provide the immediate and long-term support needed to help the individuals who have worked in the travel and tourism industry in the Gulf Coast get back on their feet."
