Diskeeper Recommends Defragmenting After Service Pack 4 Installation

Business Wire, Sept 15, 2005

BURBANK, Calif. -- According to Diskeeper Corporation (formerly Executive Software), millions of system administrators have begun testing Microsoft's re-release of Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000, and hundreds of millions of systems set to "Auto Update" have begun to accept the patch without regards to the effects a service pack installation causes. What most in the IT industry don't know is that patch installs create disk fragmentation which can degrade the performance of Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office and slow anti-spyware scans and backup times.

A newly released study discloses the impact that service packs, updates and hotfixes have on disk defragmentation. The white paper, written by monitoring and security software expert, Joe Kinsella, reveals that patches can create hundreds, or even thousands of file fragments.

According to one of Kinsella's test cases, when installing Service Pack 2 on Windows XP 197 files became fragmented, creating a total of 1,656 stray file fragments. Installing today's release of Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 will likely cause similar levels of disk fragmentation.

The study also went on to document disk fragmentation's negative performance effects on Microsoft Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, anti-spyware and anti-virus scans. Joe Kinsella's study marks the first time anti-spyware and web browser performance has been tested against disk fragmentation levels. The complete study, "The Impact of Disk Fragmentation," can be downloaded at http://www.windowsitpro.com/Whitepapers/.> Windows 2000 systems will need to be defragmented after installing Service Pack 4 to avoid performance degradation. The real solution is to employ an automatic defragmentation solution, typified by Diskeeper, the number one automatic defragmenter. Diskeeper runs in the background handling fragmentation as it occurs, keeping systems running at peak performance.
