Business Wire, Sept 16, 2005
NORWALK, Conn. -- Internet travel and hotel reservation service priceline.com(R) (Nasdaq: PCLN) reported today that 12% of the Louisiana hotels affected by Hurricane Katrina and 21% of the affected Mississippi hotels have been able to re-open for business. These figures are based on hotel properties that participate in the priceline network of reservation services.
Through its network of reservation services, including priceline.com and TravelWeb.com, priceline.com works with virtually all of the nation's major hotel brands and chains. After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, priceline.com's hotel staff reported that, in Louisiana, 258 participating hotel properties in the storm's path either were damaged and forced to close, or could not be contacted due to power outages. In Mississippi, 84 participating hotels in the storm's path were damaged or couldn't be reached. As of today, 32 Louisiana participating hotels and 18 Mississippi participating hotels are back in business. Most of the re-opened properties are being used to house relief workers and evacuees.
"We believe that bringing the travel infrastructure back on-line is an important part of the rebuilding effort and we are working with our hotel partners to bring back reservation capabilities as soon as they are ready," said Tim Gordon, Senior Vice President of Hotels for priceline.com.
Priceline.com also said today that the company and its approximately 300 employees had so far raised more than $20,000 in contributions for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
