Stew Leonard's Finds 'Cream of the Crop' New Store Sites with MapInfo® Location Intelligence; World's Largest Dairy Store and Specialty Grocery Chain Relies on MapInfo Location Intelligence Technology for Site Selection Analysis

Business Wire, Sept 19, 2005

TROY, N.Y. -- MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ: MAPS), the leading global provider of Location Intelligence solutions, today announced that Stew Leonard's is utilizing MapInfo advanced site selection technology and services to identify profitable new store locations and to accurately predict sales potential. Based on MapInfo's research and recommendations, the unique dairy and grocery store chain recently established the location of its newest store in Orange, Connecticut. This new location is expected to create 450 jobs and bring in $700,000 in tax revenue to the town.

While Stew Leonard's bought the land in Orange nine years ago, construction was delayed as the town opposed the expansion due to increased traffic flow. MapInfo conducted a thorough analysis of what traffic patterns would be like if a new store was developed. This analysis became the backbone for a comprehensive study in which consultants specializing in traffic patterns, environmental effects and economic impacts presented to the town's planning committee. As a result, the town decided to allow construction of the new Stew Leonard's, and development is currently underway.

"We brought in MapInfo to research the sales potential, thereby allowing traffic conditions to be predicted around the new store, and to devise a strategy for managing this traffic," said Vince Summa, chief financial officer at Stew Leonard's. "Using its Location Intelligence technology, MapInfo analyzed a variety of demographics, estimated the number of patrons the new store could expect to handle and determined what changes would need to be made to the existing roads. Using this information, we were able to propose methods for effectively controlling the inevitable increase of motorists to the area, including the placement of additional intersections, as well as the modification of traffic-light sequences for existing stoplights."

"The work that MapInfo conducted for Stew Leonard's exemplifies how our Location Intelligence technology is critical for not only selecting optimal sites, but for detailing important matters, such as what a city or town will look like once that store opens and how it will impact residents," said Mike Hickey, COO of MapInfo. "We are pleased that our technology played a key role in helping Stew Leonard's receive approval to commence the construction of its latest store."
