AOL Taps Entertainment Executive for New Programming Post
Business Wire, Sept 19, 2005
NEW YORK -- AOL announced today the appointment of Erik Flannigan to Vice President, Programming. Flannigan will fill a newly created programming post, overseeing four distinct but interrelated entertainment websites on AOL and AOL.com (http://www.aol.com) including Moviefone (http://moviefone.com), AOL Music (http://www.aolmusic.com), AOL Radio (http://aolradio.com), and AOL Television (http://www.aol.com/television).
Flannigan, who was most recently vice president of programming for Buena Vista Datacasting, part of the Walt Disney Company, will report to Bill Wilson, Senior Vice President, Programming, beginning September 26. He will be based in Los Angeles.
Said Bill Wilson, "I have closely followed Erik's successes throughout his dynamic career and am very glad we have an executive of his stature and experience joining us to lead our award-winning music, movie and television online experiences. Erik's passion, creativity and knowledge are unparalleled, and the teams are excited to have him on board."
Flannigan said that: "AOL is leading the way in broadband entertainment programming, and I'm thrilled to join these successful teams. My passion for music, movies and television runs deep, and while content is king, how you present it to millions of users is just as important. I look forward to developing programming that continues to build upon AOL's innovations in these areas."
While at Disney, Flannigan was responsible for programming and production on the MovieBeam VOD service, as well as day-to-day relationships and licensing deals with studio partners. Before that, Flannigan was Senior Vice President in charge of entertainment web sites for the Walt Disney Internet Group, including MrShowbiz.com, ABC.com and Movies.com. He also served as Vice President at RealNetworks, overseeing the company's on-demand music and entertainment subscription businesses.
Flannigan, who hails from Seattle, WA, is the author of Led Zeppelin: Heaven and Hell - An Illustrated History (Harmony/Crown 1991).
