Hoop It Up World Champions Announced; Kids, Teens and Adults Competed for the Ultimate Title of Hoop It Up's 3on3 World Champion
Business Wire, Sept 5, 2005
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A total of 271 teams of the best 3on3 basketball players in the country competed in the 2005 Hoop It Up World Championships this Labor Day weekend. The event took place on the downtown streets of Disney in Orlando and hosted teams from 25 different age and skill divisions, attracting upwards of 7,000 spectators.
The Hoop It Up World Championships consisted of teams from 40 states; each team played in its local Hoop It Up tournament to earn a spot at the World Championships. The teams competed for a championship title, a position on the national rankings and official Hoop It Up hardware.
Hoop It Up participants ranged in ages from eight to 30 and played in competitive and recreational divisions. The most elite players in the tournament played in the Top Flight division, which was won by Ariel Slow and Steady, of Chicago, IL. The event also featured a crowd-favorite slam dunk contest, won by Phil Webster, of St. Pete, FL. All participants qualified to compete at World's by winning their local Hoop It Up tournament.
"The World Championships empower players to realize their potential as competitors on a national scale," said Cris Carrico, president of Crestline Sports. "The travel, the superior location, the diverse group of people and the level of competition makes this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all involved."
Spalding and the Army National Guard sponsored this year's Hoop It Up tour, which began in Phoenix, Ariz., on Feb. 26, and stopped in a total of 52 cities this season. The 2006 season will begin in Dallas in March 2006. The following teams won their divisions at the Hoop It Up World Championships:
