AMD and Cable & Wireless Panama Make Internet Connectivity Easy with FacilNet
Business Wire, Sept 6, 2005
PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Broadband Internet Access Solution Designed to Enhance Education and Communication Throughout Panama
AMD (NYSE:AMD) and Cable & Wireless today launched FacilNet, an innovative Web access program based on the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC), expanding similar affordable Internet connectivity programs already in place across the Caribbean to Central America. FacilNet is offered as a complete solution including broadband connectivity, PIC, pre-installed software, monitor, keyboard and mouse to provide Internet access to an increasingly broad range of customers.
Programs like FacilNet are designed to provide consumers an online experience that is as simple and enjoyable as possible. Bundled software, device and connectivity services ensure that customers have everything they need to instantly communicate with family and friends, tap into informational and educational resources and explore all that the Web offers.
PIC is a new category of Internet access devices running a Microsoft(R) Windows(R) powered operating system and designed to provide managed Internet connectivity and basic computing capabilities including a Web browser, e-mail, productivity tools (e.g. word processing and spreadsheet applications) and the ability to view images and multimedia files. PICs are easy to maintain and are designed to resist viruses, adware and spyware, significantly lowering the cost of maintenance.
"Cable & Wireless Panama continues to develop Internet access programs that meet the needs of our diverse customer base. With FacilNet we are able to provide consumers a complete Internet access solution including connection, device and support," said Roberto Mendoza, senior vice president, Marketing Communications & Corporate Affairs, Cable & Wireless Panama. "Ensuring that all of our Panamanian customers have access to the Web and the opportunities it provides is a top priority for Cable & Wireless."
AMD and Cable & Wireless have rolled out PIC programs across the Caribbean. The FacilNet program marks an expansion into Central America, a region with an online population of just over 10 percent. Panama, with about six percent of its citizens online, ranks in the middle of the countries that comprise Central America.
"For high-growth regions like Central America, we are working closely with leading companies like AMD and Cable & Wireless to provide customers with products that enable immense cultural, educational and economic opportunities that are available through computing and Internet connectivity. The FacilNet PIC program provides user-friendly software and hardware that is easy to learn and use, delivering a great user experience," said Tom Phillips, general manager, Windows Hardware and Emerging Markets, Windows Client Group at Microsoft.
"Based on successful PIC program roll-outs across the Caribbean, AMD and Cable & Wireless are working together to expand online usage in Central America," said Iain Morris, senior vice president, Microprocessor Solutions Sector, AMD. "The PIC is an ideal platform for first-time Internet users, with pre-loaded software, integrated security and a ruggedized design. We are confident the FacilNet program will provide an intuitive, affordable Web experience for Panamanian consumers."
