Summary

Sandoz, headquartered in Holzkirchen, Germany, is the generics business of Novartis, and makes up part of Novartis' Consumer Health Division. Sandoz had previously been based in Vienna, Austria, but moved to the German site in 2005 as a consequence of the Hexal acquisition; the site had been the home of the Hexal HQ.

Prior to Sandoz' re-branding in May 2003, Novartis' generics business had been made up of 14 separate firms. The re-branding was completed in 2005, with the exception of Lek, which remains a separate Slovenia-based company for the time being. The company is one of the largest generic pharmaceuticals businesses in the world. Sandoz currently employs over 20,000 people in 110 countries. It operates through three business franchises:

--The Pharmaceuticals Business produces finished dosage forms, which are sold to pharmacies, hospitals and other healthcare outlets;

--The Biopharmaceutical Business draws on the company's experience with biotechnology, and is expanding to meet demand;

--The Industrial Business manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients and their intermediates for internal requirements and industrial partners.
