CNET Wins Four ''Maggie Awards'' From the Western Publications Association for Outstanding Editorial Content
Business Wire, April 27, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO -- CNET, the definitive source for technology news, unbiased product reviews, and free secure downloads, and a property of CNET Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNET), today announced it has won four "Maggie Awards" for its outstanding editorial content as part of the 55th Annual Western Publications Association (WPA) award event. CNET News.com won Best Publication Website/Consumer; CNET.com won for Best Regularly Featured Web Column/Consumer; and CNET.com and CNET News.com tied for Best Web Article/Consumer.
"The Maggie Awards are among the publishing industry's most prestigious achievements, and it's an honor to be recognized," said Jai Singh, senior vice president and editorial director of CNET. "These awards underscore CNET's position as the leading source of information for those who are passionate about technology, as well as our commitment to producing award-winning journalism and expert, unbiased buying advice."
The award for Best Publication Website/Consumer is based on a site's best overall use of editorial, graphics, navigation, functionality and design. With a relaunch of its Web site in October 2005, CNET News.com broadened the scope of its editorial coverage to encompass all things digital and introduced news filtering tools that give readers multiple ways to track the information they value most.
The Best Web Article/Consumer was awarded to two CNET Networks properties. The first article, "Microsoft Meets the Hackers," was written by Ina Fried, senior writer at CNET News.com. In addition to winning a Maggie, the article was named best online feature by the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The second winning article was CNET.com's "Hybrid Car Buying Guide" by Lindsey Turrentine, executive editor, and Wayne Cunningham, senior editor. Launched in May 2005, as part of CNET.com's new Car Tech section, the Hybrid Buying Guide recognized hybrid technology as a choice for car buyers and advised them what to look for.
The Best Regularly Featured Web Column/Consumer was awarded to David Carnoy, executive editor at CNET.com for his Fully Equipped column. Created in 2002, this bi-weekly column features David's opinions on the latest gadgets on the market as well as rumors, trends, and predictions for the next "big thing" in consumer electronics.
These wins build on CNET Networks' momentum in providing award-winning editorial content to its communities of passionate users. The company is also nominated for several prestigious industry awards that will be announced next month, including: CNET.com's nomination for a coveted National Magazine Award in General Excellence Online; and CNET.com, CNET Download.com, GameSpot's and Metacritic's nominations for the 10th Annual Webby Awards.
The WPA is a nonprofit trade association working to advance the business of print and electronic magazines in the western United States.
