InPhonic to Offer WeatherBug® Mobile Forecasts & Severe Weather Alerts; WeatherBug Added to the InPhonic Mobile Content Line-Up
Business Wire, April 27, 2006
GERMANTOWN, Md. & WASHINGTON -- WeatherBug, the leading provider of live local weather information services, today announced an agreement with InPhonic, Inc. (NASDAQ:INPC), a leading online seller of wireless devices and services, to offer WeatherBug's Mobile Alerts to customers at InPhonic's mFly (www.mfly.com) mobile content site, its popular comparison shopping site Wirefly (www.wirefly.com) and through select InPhonic-powered Web sites. The agreement marks InPhonic's expansion of its mobile content offerings beyond entertainment-oriented ringtones, wallpaper and text alerts.
Recent analyst reports from Telephia and Informa indicated that nearly 7.5 million U.S. mobile users used weather-related sites via their wireless device last year, making it the second most popular category for mobile Internet users. The new WeatherBug offering is a monthly subscription service that provides subscribers with multi-day weather forecasts sent to their mobile device, as well as special text alerts when severe weather is anticipated. Once users enter their zip code, WeatherBug accesses live neighborhood level data from its dense network of 8,000 WeatherBug Tracking Stations and over 1,000 cameras across the nation. Primarily based at neighborhood schools and public safety facilities across the U.S., the WeatherBug Network is the largest exclusive weather network in the world.
"As evidenced by last year's prolific hurricane season, mobile access to weather information is often the only access users have when they are on the go or when severe weather disrupts power and Internet access. We are excited to expand our mobile content offering with this powerful new service," said Sean Mallon, VP & GM, Mobile Content Services for InPhonic. "We saw a growing customer demand for easy-to-use and easy-to-receive wireless news and weather alerts. WeatherBug was the obvious choice as the established industry leader in weather, issuing more severe weather alerts than any other U.S. weather provider."
"WeatherBug is proud to be providing InPhonic's customers with our mobile weather alert service," said Chris Brozenick, VP & GM of WeatherBug Mobile. "With its popular mFly.com mobile content site and thousands of InPhonic-powered online mobile storefronts, InPhonic spans the nation and all major wireless carriers with a well-established consumer following."
