Black & Veatch Performing Power Backup Services for T-Mobile in Hurricane-Prone Gulf Coast Area; Services to Improve T-Mobile's Network Reliability During Severe Weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, announced today it is providing wireless carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. with engineering and construction services to install backup power solutions at wireless sites in the Southeast region of the United States. Deploying additional backup power supply at wireless sites increases T-Mobile's network reliability, particularly during severe weather.
"Severe weather, such as hurricanes, can be debilitating to wireless communications. During a time when public safety depends on reliable communication, we're ensuring our wireless sites have the proper backup power supply to remain in continuous operation during a commercial utility power outage," said Tim Chandler, T-Mobile, Regional Vice President.
Black & Veatch is auditing each site to determine the most feasible technology to supply backup power to the site. In addition, Black & Veatch is providing permitting services for the construction of the backup power sites which will be completed by its subsidiary, Overland Contracting Inc.
"We're considering alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen fuel cell and micro-turbine technologies, for the reliable operation of these backup facilities," said Black & Veatch Regional Associate Vice President Paul Reynolds. "The goal is to provide T-Mobile with an energy source that has low life-cycle costs and long run times."
Black & Veatch has been providing T-Mobile with wireless site deployment services for 10 years. Black & Veatch provided a range of services for T-Mobile immediately following Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma. These services focused on setting up a temporary communications network immediately following the storms through the use of Cells on Wheels (COWs) and working to restore T-Mobile's network through the replacement of base stations, coaxial cable and antennas and installing and refueling generators.
