Enterasys Networks Deploys Packeteer's iShared™ Branch Office Solution; Rapid Five-Month ROI Achieved Through Accelerated Remote File Transfers and Storage and Server Consolidation
Business Wire, August 14, 2006
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Packeteer(R) (NASDAQ:PKTR), the global leader in WAN Application Optimization, today announced that Andover, Mass.-based Enterasys Networks, the Secure Networks Company(TM), is deploying Packeteer's iShared(TM) branch office Wide Area File Services appliances as a strategic component of a successful remote storage and server consolidation initiative. By deploying iShared appliances for caching in its branch office locations, as well as in its corporate headquarters in Andover and data center in Boston, Enterasys is improving file transfer performance and increasing the productivity of its collaborative engineering resources. At the same time, the company is simplifying timely data backups and replication at remote locations while eliminating WAN link upgrades. Importantly, Enterasys has also realized a five-month ROI through the remote storage and server consolidation enabled by Packeteer's Microsoft Windows-based iShared solution.
Enterasys embarked on a server centralization initiative to streamline operational overhead and improve the performance of file transfer and print jobs. However, because the company relies extensively on Microsoft technology including Active Directory, SMS, and e-mail and office applications, any consolidation strategy had to optimize file transfer performance that historically suffered from latency problems across the company's WAN links.
"We utilize an entirely Enterasys XSR-based VPN network that has reduced our network costs 80 percent, and improved bandwidth utilization nearly 400 percent," said Rich Casselberry, director of IT operations, with Enterasys. "Even with our VPN network, however, we still saw value in deploying iShared appliances for our branch locations. We found that WAN latency continued to impact network file performance. Strict backup policies and the importance of securing corporate content, combined with limited IT support at the branches across multiple geographies, were critical challenges as we sought to centrally manage the data from our distributed operations."
Enterasys acquired the iShared appliance because it is the industry's only native Windows-based platform. Because the appliance integrates Wide Area File Services (WAFS) for real-time access to shared files across the WAN with acceleration and caching technologies that reduce latency, Enterasys realized immediate application access and file transfer performance improvements in its branch offices worldwide.
"The iShared appliances enable us to centralize data and cache remotely," Casselberry said. "Because everything is cached, there is consistently improved file server response time at every single branch location. And because the iShared solution has built in 'locks and lease' mechanisms that guarantee the cached copy is always synchronized with the most current versions in the datacenter, there are never any worries that users will be working on different versions of the file".
