Genesis Leverages DST Hardware and Software Production Experience
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Genesis[R] Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq:GNSS), a world leader in the development of video processing technologies for flat-panel TVs, monitors, and other consumer display products, today announced that Digital STREAM Technology (DST), a leading Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), has commenced shipment of its ATSC DTVs based on the powerful combination of Genesis Microchip's PE[c]rVIEW HD[TM] 500 (gm10500) Digital TV Controller and FLI8668 ("Cortez Advanced") video controller to its OEM customers. DST is also licensing this high-quality and robust turnkey reference design to CE companies desiring to offer a cost-effective, analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC and Clear QAM) single board 1080p solution with minimal resources and time-to-market.
"We selected Genesis Microchip's PE[c]rVIEW HD[TM] 500 and Cortez Advanced combination because together they provide best-of-breed capabilities in video/audio/ graphics performance," said Mr. Ju Kim, CEO, Digital Stream Technology. "Using the proven technologies of PE[c]rVIEW HD[TM] 500 and Cortez Advanced allowed us to create a single, cost-effective 1080p DTV platform that is viable for volume production while still offering industry-leading video quality regardless of the source material."
"We are pleased to leverage DST's extensive DTV and ODM experience to offer CE companies a DTV controller solution with minimized time-to-market and engineering resources. DST's production-proven software and field-proven hardware experience has resulted in a highly focused solution for the U.S. flat-panel TV market that squarely exceeds retailer and consumer expectations," said Neil Mitchell, Genesis Microchip's vice president marketing, TV business. "With our award-winning video quality and differentiating features such as support for full 1080p in/1080p out and 1080p Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing processing on both analog and digital TV signals, existing and new Genesis customers can quickly extend their analog TV lineup to include high-quality digital TVs well in time to meet the U.S. FCC mandate."
Additionally, Genesis and DST have collaborated closely in the development of this hardware and software platform. As a result:
1) Genesis is able to offer a DST production-proven platform to Genesis customers as a reference design.
2) DST has put Genesis's royalty-free, production-ready stack through its stringent production process, offering Genesis customers an extremely reliable software solution in addition to its production-proven IC and platform.
The PE[c]rVIEW HD[TM] 500 DTV controller is a highly integrated, High Definition, and unified memory MPEG2 decoder designed for Integrated Digital TVs, fully compliant with ATSC, DVB and OpenCable (Digital Cable Ready) requirements. A high performance, industry-standard 32-bit MIPS processor, combined with a graphics engine, enables advanced customer applications and sophisticated user interface designs, while firmware-programmable multimedia processing engines are used for digital broadcast signal decoding and advanced, multi-format audio processing. The controller also features a very unique, flexible Video eXpansion Interface (VXI) that allows customers to render and overlay graphics in a manner that preserves the graphics quality of TV user interfaces (UI) and electronic program guides (EPG) through the system. By pairing the PE[c]rVIEW HD[TM] 500 DTV controller with the FLI8668 "Cortez Advanced" controller, the modular solution offers cinema-quality video processing pipeline up to 1080p.
