Gemstar-TV Guide Signs New IPG Patent License Agreement with Philips for European Market

Companies Have Also Extended IPG Technology License
LOS ANGELES -- Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMST), a leading media, entertainment and technology company, has signed a new Interactive Program Guide (IPG) patent license agreement with Philips Electronics. The agreement allows Philips to use Gemstar-TV Guide's intellectual property in certain consumer electronics products designed for the European market. These products include TVs, recorders and retail set-top boxes.
This agreement also modifies and extends the terms under Philips' existing technology license agreement for Gemstar's IPG in the United States and Europe, and other regions where Gemstar-IPG technology becomes available outside of Japan. Specific terms of the multi-year agreement were not disclosed.
Mike McKee, chief operating officer of Gemstar-TV Guide and president, IPGs, said, "As we continue to expand our IPG business worldwide, it was important for us to have an agreement in place with Philips, one of the largest consumer electronics companies in Europe. We are very pleased to provide them with products and services that will help enhance the television viewing experience of their loyal consumers. Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG is built directly into consumer electronics products, providing consumers with the industry's most advanced program guide, with no additional subscription fee or phone connection required. The service provides value, added information, and guidance allowing consumers to make the most of their viewing choices.
