The National Center for Drug Free Sport Ensures Secure Electronic Chain of Custody with Hand Held Products™; Sports Drug-Testing Company Uses Dolphin® 7900 Mobile Computers to ''Error Proof'' Information Collection

Business Wire, Feb 13, 2006

SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y. -- Hand Held Products, a leader in image-based mobile data collection systems, announced today that The National Center for Drug Free Sport has implemented its Dolphin(R) 7900 mobile computers, powered by Adaptus(TM) Imaging Technology, for data collection during sports drug testing. The solution uses a software platform developed by Technology Solutions Group, a technology partner of Hand Held Products.

Drug Free Sport currently operates and manages drug-testing programs for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and other sports organizations in addition to contracting with 150 colleges and universities to conduct institutional testing programs. In 2002, Drug Free Sport became the only drug-testing organization to adopt the electronic chain of custody when it did so for its NCAA operations, eliminating a paper-based workflow in favor of digital input and storage of information. This has greatly reduced data-entry errors and increased confidentiality through secure and encrypted communications.

"We needed to find a device that was durable and contained features that would protect our investment from becoming obsolete in just a few years, so something like a consumer-grade PDA was not an adequate solution," said Frank Uryasz, president of Drug Free Sport. "TSG identified the Dolphin 7900s as the most durable and easy-to-use solution on the market. Unlike our previous device, which was severely limited, the Dolphin 7900s possess functionality that we can build on."

Typically, Drug Free Sport's crew chiefs travel to the athletic test sites with all of the athlete information already loaded onto their device. Once there, they collect the test samples and use the Dolphin 7900 running the SCAN(sm) II application, to verify and record any additional information from the athletes. They register each sample by reading a bar code affixed to the container and collect a digital signature from the athlete. The crew chief then signs the screen of the Dolphin 7900 to verify that the correct collection policies were followed. All information is then uploaded to Drug Free Sport's central database.

Running on Microsoft Windows Mobile and using Microsoft's .NET Framework(R) and SQL Server Mobile(R), the newly re-architected SCAN(sm) applications allow for maximum flexibility and future growth.

"We committed to having SCAN(sm) II deployed in time to conduct fall sports testing for NCAA and off-season testing for Minor League Baseball," said Michael Koos, president of Technology Solutions Group. "Hand Held Products' sales and support teams were instrumental in helping us deliver on that promise."

To further ensure the accuracy and legitimacy of its testing, Drug Free Sport plans to use the Dolphin 7900's image capture capabilities to visually document that the correct athlete has been tested. In addition, as cellular connectivity grows in the rural areas where many of the collegiate athletes attend school, Drug Free Sport sees an opportunity to use the radio capabilities of the Dolphin 7900 to transmit test data in real-time.

"It is human nature to compete to win, and we are proud to help Drug Free Sport and its clients provide a level playing field for athletes across the country," said Kevin Jost, president and CEO of Hand Held Products. "Through the innovative application expertise of TSG, and Hand Held Products' commitment to delivering best-in-class mobile solutions, Drug Free Sport can be confident that the same devices they are using today will serve them for years to come."
