iBasis Brings the Benefits of International VoIP Services to Leading Swiss Operator; sunrise Selects The iBasis Global VoIP Network for High Quality International Service for Fixed and Mobile Traffic
Business Wire, Feb 15, 2006
BURLINGTON, Mass. -- iBasis, Inc. (OTCBB: IBAS), a leader in international long distance, VoIP, and prepaid calling cards, announced at 3GSM World Congress here that sunrise, part of the TDC group and the second largest telecom company in Switzerland, has interconnected with The iBasis Network(TM) for international voice services. The interconnection with iBasis enables sunrise to route international voice traffic over The iBasis Network, the leading global VoIP network, and expands iBasis' ability to complete mobile calls in the country.
Mobile operators have taken advantage of the iBasis international service portfolio, especially the company's PremiumCertified(TM) international routing product, which is specifically designed to deliver the highest quality of service for retail traffic. PremiumCertified features more than 700 routes that are actively monitored and managed to deliver quality that meets or exceeds retail quality benchmarks. Through a direct IP interconnect, mobile operators can fully leverage iBasis' VoIP expertise including sophisticated network performance monitoring and call routing systems based on the company's patent pending Assured Quality Routing(R) technology.
Increasing competition is driving many mobile operators to consider alternative international carriers that can provide quality while reducing costs. iBasis focuses on meeting mobile operators' pricing and quality requirements which will help sustain subscriber growth while minimizing capital and operational expenses:
--Lower termination cost with more than 1,000 direct routes in more than 100 on-net countries;
--Flexible pricing packages;
--High quality of call completion and ensured route stability; and a
--Fully managed solution for provisioning, routing, and quality monitoring
As a result, mobile operators are rapidly able to increase their international capacity with almost no additional capital investment. iBasis' cooperation with mobile operators in building out their international connections allows them to stay focused on increasing ARPU and margins and expanding their service portfolio to sustain subscriber growth in their domestic markets.
"The utilization of VoIP by mobile carriers mirrors our experience with fixed line carriers," said Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of iBasis. "Leading mobile operators are recognizing that VoIP provides the perfect solution for extending the reach of their GSM network. We are very pleased to have sunrise join the growing number of mobile carriers connected to The iBasis Network. Our ability to deliver high quality of service to mobile network operators and our proven operational expertise is enabling them to reap the benefits of our global VoIP network and our interconnections with more than 370 carriers around the world."
According to Telegeography 2006, mobile operators account for a growing share of both originated and terminated international traffic. The growth in international calls that are either originating or terminating on mobile phones is outpacing the growth of new mobile subscribers. As a result, operators are beginning to view efficient international termination agreements as potential competitive advantages. Mobile users in Europe generated 60% of the world's total mobile-originated calls.
With the commoditization of voice services and price wars in most Western European countries, ARPU stagnation or decline can rapidly become a real threat for mobile operators. International calling packages combined to lower cost of transport can help mobile network operators maintain margin and grow their customer base and international usage.
