Business Wire, Feb 2, 2006

NEW YORK -- The New York Times today announced that it launched a new podcasting initiative on January 26. Within days, the newspaper's summary of front page stories appeared in the top five requested downloads on the iTunes Music Store's "Today's Top 100 Podcasts" list.

The New York Times Front Page podcast is a synopsis of the top stories of the day. Podcasts of The Times's front page are available for free through iTunes, Yahoo! Podcasts, as well as on My Yahoo! and at the paper's Web site, NYTimes.com/podcasts.

"This is just one of the ways we're expanding New York Times journalism into various forms of multimedia as we grow to meet the needs of our audience," said Vivian Schiller, senior vice president of The New York Times Television and Video. "Audio - and video - are natural extensions of our reporting and our brand."

"Our first podcasts represent a modest expansion of the audio we've been distributing over the Web and on WQXR Radio," said Jonathan I. Landman, deputy managing editor, The New York Times. "We expect to offer a more ambitious menu of original productions in the coming weeks and months."

Other featured New York Times podcasts include reviews from Culture and Dining, an Olympics Update and select interviews from The New York Times speaker series, TimesTalks, including media reporter Bill Carter's recent interview with Larry David from The Times's fifth annual Arts & Leisure Weekend.
