SDR Forum Taps Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. To Develop Reference Waveform for SCA Implementation

DENVER -- The Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum has selected Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:MRCY) to develop a reference waveform for the U.S. military's Software Communications Architecture (SCA). The reference waveform is an example application that will help promote increased proficiency for designers/developers implementing the SCA. The announcement was made during the Forum's January general meeting in Miami.
Developed under the U.S. Department of Defense's multi-billion dollar Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program with input provided by the SDR Forum, the SCA is a set of specifications that describes the interaction between software and hardware components of an SDR and provides software commands to control its function. The SCA supports the JTRS mission to ensure that SDR devices from different manufacturers can effectively and efficiently communicate with each other.
In addition to military applications by the United States and numerous coalition forces, the SCA also is being closely examined by work groups within the Forum for its portability and use in the commercial wireless and public safety applications.
Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. is expected to complete the reference waveform by September 2006. It will be available to Forum members for a period of six months, and will then be released to the industry via the Forum's website at http://www.sdrforum.org.
The Forum has been active in the development and implementation of the SCA. Most recently, the Forum teamed up with Communications Research Center (CRC), Canada, to develop version 2.2 of the SCA -- a Java-based reference implementation available for free on the CRC's website (http://www.crc.ca/rars). This version has been certified by the Joint Test and Evaluation Laboratory. In addition, a one-channel push-to-talk application is available to help demonstrate the functionality of the SCA.
