3:38 PM (Yesterday) United Therapeutics Rallies
United Therapeutics (NASDAQ:UTHR) is more than three percent higher today to 66.80. Except for a quick bullish mention on RealMoney.com, there isn't any other news to account for the move. The stock has gained more than four percent in the last two days after falling steadily for most of the last three months. UTHR made a five-year high of 78.74 in early November. However, since that time the stock is down 15 percent. It fell through several key support levels in the 68-70 area a couple of weeks back but is getting some support here from its long-term 10-month moving average. Short interest is significant at almost 13 percent of the stock's float and earnings are coming up in the next three weeks. So any positive news could spur a rally higher. But a bad report could cause UTHR to break support.
9:30 AM NYSE & NASDAQ New Highs/New Lows With Equity Scorecard
One feature of our Daily Market blog is a set of tables looking at stocks that have achieved new annual highs or lows while posting an "extreme" Schaeffer's Equity Scorecard rating. Among the stocks making the lists today are Black Box (NASDAQ:BBOX) and Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ: ESLR). To see both of the lists, please visit our website.
1:21 PM Gap Up on Good News
Gap (NYSE:GPS) offers casual apparel, accessories, and personal care products under the Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy brands. The stock is up about two percent in early afternoon trading after the company issued earnings guidance this morning. GPS said its fiscal year 2005 earnings would be above the consensus view on stronger than expected comps. It issued upside guidance for fiscal 2005, saying it sees earnings of between $1.22 and $1.25 per share. The consensus estimate is $1.15 per share. GPS also said its January same-store sales rose one percent. Analysts had expected the company to report a 3.4-percent decline. GPS was up more than five percent this morning but has had trouble with chart resistance at the 18.50 area. There's quite a bit of optimism on GPS. The Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) is lower than 87 percent of all SOIR of the past year. Short interest is meager too. It's fallen almost 40 percent in the last four months and stands at a four-year low.
2:18 PM Tessera Tech Strong Despite Disappointing Earnings
I'm having a tough time figuring out why Tessera Technologies (NASDAQ:TSRA) is rallying today. The company missed the consensus estimate by a penny when it reported earnings last night, missed on revenue, and gave an earnings guidance for fiscal 2006 below previous estimates. Expectations for this company seemed high as well given the extremely low put/call ratio, the recent run up in the stock price, and the fact that every analyst covering the shares has a "buy" rating on the equity. The shares gapped lower by about two percent this morning, and have been on the rise ever since. The stock is currently up eight percent from yesterday's close. I'd like to know what's causing the push.
