Entire Vongo Movie Library Available for Digital Download by Akamai
Business Wire, Jan 10, 2006
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Pioneering a New Era in Digital Media Entertainment, Starz Entertainment Group Chooses Akamai as a Global Distribution Platform to Support the Download and Delivery of More Than a Thousand Video-on-Demand Titles
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that Starz Entertainment Group (SEG) is relying on the Akamai Media Delivery service as the underlying video delivery platform for their innovative movie download subscription service, Vongo, unveiled last week. Making broadband entertainment content accessible from a series of devices - both connected and portable - is a critical component of the evolution taking place in the media and entertainment space. The Akamai Media Delivery solution is at the core of this evolution with its proven ability to quickly and reliably scale to support consumer demand for popular broadband digital media services like Vongo.
Starz is using Windows Media technologies to power the Vongo service for their ability to provide subscribers with the highest-quality playback experience, whether enjoyed at home on a Windows-based PC or on the go using eligible portable media devices or laptops. Vongo subscribers have access to more than 1,000 movies and video selections, as well as a live stream of the Starz TV channel, for a monthly cost of $9.99 and pay-per-view titles for $3.99 per movie.
SEG needed a technology solution that would support anticipated large volumes of subscriber requests for their library of feature length films and videos. Leveraging Akamai's global digital media delivery platform, Vongo users experience fast and reliable downloads, as well as the high-quality video that they have come to expect from an entertainment leader such as SEG.
"At SEG, we are committed to engaging with our customer base to deliver new services that maximize their entertainment experience," said Bob Greene, senior vice president of advanced services for SEG. "With the launch of Vongo, we're bringing more than 1,000 movies and video content to the public via a "one-stop" service for all types of online and portable viewing. Many of these movies are digitally rich and have incredible special effects, requiring a robust global platform like Akamai's to support high demand."
With Vongo, SEG will offer a rotating slate of feature films and will give viewers access to a wide breadth of content, which will also be available on its cable channel.
"The two primary ingredients to a successful broadband entertainment experience are compelling content and giving consumers content on their device of choice and at their time and place of choice. With the Vongo service, SEG brings a world class library of amazing content directly to consumers," said Robert Hughes, executive vice president of Sales, Services and Marketing at Akamai. "By choosing Akamai Media Delivery as the enabling platform for delivery of this content, SEG can be assured that Vongo subscribers will enjoy a high quality experience similar to watching in their living room, wherever they want to watch it."
