Fraunhofer HE-AAC Codec Enables Mobile Music Applications on BenQ Handsets
Business Wire, Jan 19, 2006
ERLANGEN, Germany -- The new BenQ Mobile phones S75 and SL75 will be delivered with state-of-the-art MPEG-4 HE-AAC v2 audio software from Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, enabling almost unlimited mobile music experience to consumers.
MPEG-4 High Efficiency Advanced Audio Codec v2, based on substantial contributions by Fraunhofer IIS, is today's most efficient audio compression technology within the MPEG-4 multimedia standard. The very low bit-rate audio codec provides high quality in stereo at 32 kbit/s. These bitrates enable mobile operators to offer full-length, high-quality music on their streaming or download services. Thus consumers can enjoy the content immediately, without waiting for it to download from their computers.
"With Fraunhofer's MPEG-4 HE-AAC v2 implementation, BenQ Mobile products S75 and SL75 will offer consumers a quality listening experience on handheld devices. HE-AAC v2 compression technology is a perfect match for mobile entertainment services", said Stefan Geyersberger, Manager IP Licensing and New Business at Fraunhofer IIS.
MPEG-4 HE-AAC will be widely used in multimedia broadcasting services for mobile devices such as DVB-H and 3GPP streaming and is already implemented in millions of devices for digital broadcasting systems such as XM Radio and Digital Radio Mondiale DRM. It is the de-facto standard for music download services on mobile phones.
